About this listen

From USA Today best-selling author Sydney Jane Baily.

Contented, privileged, and eligible until a carriage accident hurls him to the cobbled street, John Angsley, earl of Cambrey, awakens to broken bones and a battered head. Can it get worse? Opium, which eases his pain at first, brings suffering of its own, creating Lord Anguish, who must choose between the lure of laudanum and the woman he loves.

Miss Margaret Blackwood is all John has ever wanted in a woman. Unfortunately, it's clear from the start she's too young and too fickle to make him a good wife, especially with rival suitors cropping up at every turn.

Maggie's decided the earl of Cambrey's the man for her, if only a few irritating matters don't get in her way - like his two casts, a half-missing eyebrow, and a practically perfect "other" woman. But when she discovers the true insidious rival for his affection, the battle begins in earnest.

With the earl changing before her eyes from a thoughtful, kind man into a sneaky, irritable liar desperate for his next dose, Maggie may have to concede defeat and return to her many admirers. Will Lord Anguish choose the blissful relief of opium or the unpredictable passion of Miss Blackwood?

Much of the book resolves around romantic miscommunications between the main characters.
I would have liked more graphic withdrawal and more time devoted to the addiction and recovery. But at it’s hart this is a romance. The addiction is not glossed over but recovery is so much harder and I was expecting more. It’s not easy any who over come it is a hero.
The male main character is strong and confident and that makes the addiction issue that much more painful I liked the male main characters more then the female I felt she was kind of childish but actually it was spot on because she was young.
I definitely recommend this.

The use and abuse of opioids has been around for a very long time. The pharmacology of this class of drugs has been manipulated in the past few years to make them more addictive and the transport mechanism into the body changed through the years making it more accessible - gone are the opium dens and arriving are the narcotic analgesics that can be swallowed, inhaled, or given in an IV. My point is that regardless of the century opioids are very difficult to quit/give up. This book did a pretty good job, for a romance, book of exemplifying addiction, it’s consequences, and the physical and emotional problems related to withdrawal. The characters were imbued with self awareness and self deprecating humor and were sincere in their affection for each other. The subplots were few and the ones in the book were interesting on their own. I am recommending this book for its use of a new romance scenario, action scenes, and fairly mature characters. The pace was moderately quick but t'he secondary characters’ actions was not fully developed and remained a little flat. The narrator was very good. I wii read more from this author.

This (book 2) of the series was pretty good. Loved book 1 as well. I’ve purchased book 3 but not sure I’ll continue the series. The writing is great but I wanted Grayson to have a story. Tim Campbell’s narration as usual is fantastic! He’s my favorite and he does female voices very well. I recommend books 1 and 2.
