About this listen

Chelsea King was a popular high school senior, an outstanding achiever determined to make a difference. Fourteen-year-old Amber Dubois loved books and poured her heart into the animals for which she cared. Treasured by their families and friends, both girls disappeared in San Diego County, just eight miles and one year apart. The community's desperate search led authorities to John Albert Gardner, a brutal predator hiding in plain sight. Now Pulitzer-nominated author Caitlin Rother delivers an incisive, heartbreaking true-life thriller that touches our deepest fears.

I got to chapter two and stopped listening because it was so bad. I’m glad I didn’t have to use a credit!

Horrible Narrator

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

The story was interesting but the sing-songy nature of the narration and goofy unnecessary accents were incredibly distracting.
Had it been read by Keith Morrison or with a more appropriate voice, given the nature of this story, I would of given it 5 stars.

Terrible Narration

The narrator really shouldn’t be trying to mimic all these different voices. Especially DA Dumanis’s Boston accent. Ridiculous and obnoxious. I also had a hard time keeping track of so many individuals- from the killer’s extended family and acquaintances to the victims families to the law enforcement etc. just too much

Could have done without the impersonations

I remember living in San Diego when the murders happened. I thought it was going to be a more in depths book about the girls, finding them, and catching their killer. Until about chapter 14, the book is all about John Gardner. We listened to his life growing up, Family life, his Mental problems, etc. We didn't hear much about the girls until the last 4 hours.

San Diego County Murder

The story added some personal background to the families and the poor girls.
The narration… I almost just said forget it I will get the book.

Storyline follows true to record

Richly detailed true crime story on a San Diego serial killer. It was interesting to hear the details of his family, medical history, and personal life, as well as the legal details surrounding his capture and subsequent court case. The narrator kept my interest, even through the passages with more technical/medical language, and I found her easy to listen to and very clear.

Intense True Crime Done Well

Well told story which focuses more on John than the girls although you do get to know them both well. A tragic story on so many levels.

So tragic

It was presented with a very good pace and rhythm. Easy to follow and appropriately intense.

Holds your attention

The narration wasn't so much like telling a story, more like a news anchor reporting. It basically was a super long episode of 2020 or a true crime documentary. Since I'm into that, I liked it!! but it definitely didn't feel like I was listening to a book.

Long episode of 2020

The research was thorough. Story was good. The narrator’s attempt at accents and characters was terrible.

Good story not so good narrator
