Publisher's summary

A comprehensive and intimate guide to finding, keeping, and enjoying love after 50, the best kind of love there is.

Studies keep showing that love after 50 is more satisfying than at any other stage in life, and it makes sense: At this stage, you are more emotionally stable and more focused on the present; you know what you absolutely have to have, but also what you can live without; partnering is no longer about building family and fortune — it’s about sharing intimacy as grounded individuals. And sex isn’t pass/fail anymore, but about becoming erotic friends.

So, if this is the promised land, how do you get there?

In Love After 50, journalist Francine Russo interviewed the best experts in the field and dozens of couples to help show the way. Her “practical, excellent guide” (John Gottman, author of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work) includes advice like:

  • How to recover from the emotional damage of divorce, the grief of widowhood, or a history of unfulfilling relationships
  • How to build realistic requirements for a partner
  • What attitudes to bring to dating
  • How to overcome the psychical challenges of sex and embrace your erotic selves
  • How to evaluate the financial, emotional, and practical results of marrying, living together, or living apart
  • How to deal with (hostile) adult kids to safeguard your relationship and family

Love After 50 is “essential reading” (Pauline Boss, PhD, author of The Myth of Closure) that is not only practical but also unassuming and candid. It is full of real people’s stories (including the author’s), with vivid examples of couples who have overcome their pasts to form healthy and nurturing partnerships. In other words, it’s as real as love after 50 can be.

Lots of good info, but you have to adjust if you aren't big city, big money

This book definitely shared a whole bunch of useful information. It provides insight into how to move on after divorce or death. It addresses many things the target audience needs to think about. The thing that was amusing to me is that not all of us live in the urban metropolis (eg NYC), nor do we all have advanced degrees or enough money that trust funds are part of the personal experience. The information is definitely thorough and well presented, I'd definitely recommend!

Fantastic guide.

I loved the way Francine so comfortably addressed how to present yourself, deal with challenging interactions and situations, as well as her frank discussion of geriatric sex. As someone considering joining dating sites at age 75, I feel like a have a road map to help me and embolden me.

So many things to think about!

Surprisingly good reading! Clear, insightful reading about so many topics relating to finding and enjoying love as you become older. I'll continue to think about topics from this book long after finishing the last page.

‘Name changed” unnecessary repetition ruins this book

I had a very negative experience with a duration of this book. The writer could have omitted the cases (obsessively, irritatingly) when “name changed” was repeated. So many, that it just makes you what value it adds besides frustration. Couldn’t the author just make a disclaimer that most of the names are changed?! Couldn’t the narration leave out all the cases when such thing was mentioned?! There was only one case when the author wanted to mention the real names. 1000 other cases and names needed the ‘name changed’ often several times in one sentence. Weak presentation.

Very helpful, and somewhat annoying

This book has one of the most annoying, lengthy disclaimers that I've ever heard in an audiobook. Then, throughout the book, the author seems intent on telling us "name changed" every time a person's name is mentioned. Overall, the books is informative and insightful.
