About this listen

Just as Masters and Johnson were pioneers in the study of human sexuality, so Dr. John Gottman has revolutionized the study of marriage. As a professor of psychology at the University of Washington and the founder and director of the Seattle Marital and Family Institute, he has studied the habits of married couples in unprecedented detail over the course of many years. His findings, and his heavily attended workshops, have already turned around thousands of faltering marriages.

This book is the culmination of his life's work: the seven principles that guide couples on the path toward a harmonious and long-lasting relationship. Straightforward in their approach, yet profound in their effect, these principles teach partners new and startling strategies for making their marriage work. Gottman helps couples focus on each other, on paying attention to the small day-to-day moments that, strung together, make up the heart and soul of any relationship. Being thoughtful about ordinary matters provides spouses with a solid foundation for resolving conflict when it does occur and finding strategies for living with those issues that cannot be resolved.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is the definitive guide for anyone who wants their relationship to attain its highest potential.

Literally the best relationship book ever written

I’ve read a lot - and I mean A LOT - of relationship books. This one takes the cake, and the donuts, and the gluten free cookies, and honestly, the whole bakery. Should be required reading for every human who wishes to be in relationship with another - and its wisdom can be applied to ANY relationship, now just that of marriage or a romantic partnership. If I could give it fifteen stars, I would.

Marriage is worth Saving

Excellent book by John Gottman I only wish I had read his book years ago when I was first married it would have saved us as a couple a lot of heartaches and grief I'm happy to report I'm still married to the love of my life 30 years later. We've had learned many of these principles the hard way I would encourage you to read The 7 Principles and apply them immediately to your marriage

Greatl book, but not the best Narration!

Gr8 ideas and knowledge... Filled with Exercises (that will have to be written or printed out) I don't remember hearing about a web page that has such matterial (which would be a shame)

Most importantly is the Narration!
With so many exercises to fill out most of the Book's chapters, the Narration doesn't help much, it actually gets real boring and repetitive very fast...
Specially with the narrator's insistence on reading every single drop of ink on the pages

Imagine the type of question where you pick a number from 1 to 5 where each represent a certain end of the spectrum (we all know the type), now imagine each exercise has an average of 20+ of those, and there is at least 1 exercise per chapter...
Now when the narrator feels the need to say what each number represents with each and every single question... You get 20~40% of the listening time dedicated to hearing the same useless instructions over and over in quick succession which totally kills the experience for me

This is the first time I'd consider actually getting a physical copy of the book, just to avoid going through this whole experience one more time... But to still be able to benefit from the information and ideas in it

Don't buy this Audio Book!

Husbands… READ THIS BOOK!

My wife tried to get me to read this book years ago. My pride and arrogance had me believing I was already a great mate. In some ways I was, but in many others I am complaining lacking. This booked helped me see parallels to my own marriage and gives real, active advice and activities to work on my marriage. It has been transformative for my wife and I. Don’t miss out on making every year of your marriage better than the previous year. It really can get deeper and more meaningful with every passing year!

wish I had this 15 years ago

it's funny how things that seem so obvious can be missed in a marriage. Gottman reminds us of common sense approaches and drills down with exercises that make it easy.

Scientific approach to marriage

Very good information, eye opening stats, difficult to listen to when it got to the quizzes portion, robotic narration was the only con.

Great resource

The resources read in each chapter can be found as a pdf. This is an excellent resource.

Useful but Flawed

There are limitations here. The questionnaires work better on paper than on audio. The advice is entirely heteronormative, and in places there is some cringey old-fashioned gender stuff. There's no help if only one partner tries to implement the program. But underneath that, there is good advice I should probably listen to at least once a year
