Publisher's summary

This prize-winning collection brings to life skiers, ranchers, cyclists, suffragettes, tourists, super models, dead pigs, burro racers, religious beet farmers, immigrant miners, scorned lovers, penitent centenarians, and musicians. Some historical, some contemporary, its stories revel in their Western settings, as varied as the region’s landscape. Yet each story explores the ways society’s values clash with our individual desires, compelling us, despite tears or laughter, to weave our lives through these opposing forces, often creating not a lifeline, but a noose.

What an awesome bunch of stories!

From parallel to thinking is deadly to songs of wisdom it seems like every story was better than the one before. Are usually listen at night, but found myself sitting up in bed so I wouldn’t fall asleep. These stories are so good summer strange summer General fiction but all are good. I highly recommend this book, not to mention Michael Crouch did such an awesome job now reading the book he has the perfect voice for narration and I loved the book his voice everything it makes for a perfect listen.

Great collection of stories, expertly narrated

The stories are divided into two sections: Songs of Innocence, and Songs of Wisdom, and each story explores in some way how our own lives and desires come into conflict with the values of the societies in which we live. I sometimes struggle with the genre of short stories because I always want to know more about the characters of whom I've only been given a snapshot into their lives, but the writing is evocative, the characters are vivid, and Michael Crouch does an amazing job of narration.
