About this listen

A New York Times Notable Book of 2018

Shakespeare’s dark and tragic play retold in a heart-pounding New York Times best-selling thriller from the author of The Snowman and The Thirst.

Set in the 1970s in a run-down, rainy, industrial town, Jo Nesbo's Macbeth centers around a police force struggling to shed an incessant drug problem. Duncan, chief of police, is idealistic and visionary, a dream to the townspeople but a nightmare for criminals. The drug trade is ruled by two drug lords, one of whom - a master of manipulation named Hecate - has connections with the highest in power and plans to use them to get his way.

Hecate’s plot hinges on steadily, insidiously manipulating Inspector Macbeth: the head of SWAT and a man already susceptible to violent and paranoid tendencies. What follows is an unputdownable story of love and guilt, political ambition, and greed for more, exploring the darkest corners of human nature and the aspirations of the criminal mind.

Love Jo Nesbø's novels including non Harry Hole books.
But I just could not get over the narrator's accent. I know the accent is appropriate for the original setting, but not for me.
I am going to read rather listen to this novel

A brilliant retelling of Shakespeare's play set in modern times. The themes of corruption and thirst for power are timeless. The one eyed boy sums it up well when he remarks on the strangeness of using the word humanity to describe what is good after all the terrible things humans to do each other.

The narrator came off kind of flat, lots of emphasis on the Scottish accents. I did like how the story was modernized.

An Interesting reimagining of the Macbeth tale

Loved it! Like another reviewer insinuated, so many characters and no real hero’s. I could not stop stop listening. It’s gritty and dark and so much more. Jo Nesbo never disappoints and Euan Morton reels you in with his voice and character portrayal.

This should become a mini-series

Don't attempt to listen to this if you don't know Macbeth. You won't get how good it is. This was so creatively done. The characters were fleshed out so well. I highly recommend it. It is part of a collective retelling of Shakespeare. https://www.audible.com/series?asin=B01EILO5MK&ref=a_search_c3_lSeries_1_4_1&pf_rd_p=e81b7c27-6880-467a-b5a7-13cef5d729fe&pf_rd_r=6GBFEERD2XNBQ5ZJGHR8&

Fantastic re-imagining of Macbeth!

I have read everything by this author and have enjoyed everything but this book left me unsatisfied. It seemed lacking in credibility and substance despite its attempt to tailor itself after Shakespears play. The reader was ok but a bit heavy for American ears. I’m sure some will enjoy it but it was seemed like an ‘effort’ by the writer to make the meat of the story fit the outline he had invented as his starting point. Harry Hole might sum it up with, “preordained “

Not much…predictable

Jo Nesbø is one of my favourite authors. I did not like this story as much as other stories from him, the plot was "thinner".

I did finish it
