Publisher's summary

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: If there' s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it. As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate's connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe - especially those closest to Kate. As Roland' s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only 24 hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she' ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dea.

Fun!

Listened/Read for Fun (Audible/Library)
Overall Rating: 4.25
Story Rating: 4.00
Character Rating: 4.50

Audio Rating: 5.00 (not part of the overall rating)

First Thought when Finished: Despite the hot mess that was the "investigation" (sorry there were parts I was like "really Kate" and quit calling them kids), Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews was a fantastic read/listen (I actually read most of this one because I was out and about instead of where I could listen). I LOVED how it ended and can't wait to see the next adventures. I want MORE!

LOVED: I have to add the following quotes to my quote jar (most courtesy of Desandra, Ascanio, Derek--they should have a road show)

“Quick, Derek, it's your chance to shine," Ascanio said.
Derek gave him a withering look.
"Desandra is a mother, Robert is married, Kate's affianced, and I'm an old soul. You're the closest thing to a virgin we've got. Get on with growing some flowing locks.”

Desandra shrugged her shoulders. "Hey, Kate? Have you thought of walking up to Hugh and telling him that he's got the biggest dick ever?" She spread her arms to the size of a baseball bat.
"No, you think it would work?" I asked.
"It's worth a try. May be he'll be so happy you noticed his pork sword, he'll forget all about trying to kill us."
Pork sword. Kill me now. "I'll think about it."
Ascanio began patting his clothes.
"What?" Derek growled.
"Looking for something to take notes with.”

“Sit your ass down, Don Juanabe," Derek said.
"Don Juanabe?" Ascanio pulled out his swords.
"Don Juan Wannabe," Derek explained. "See I shortened it. If you still don't get it, I'll write it down for you after the fight."
"You've maxed out your wit quota for the night," Ascanio said.
"I'm just getting started."
"Be careful, you might sprain something in your brain.”

“Where are we going?” Desandra asked.
“We’re going to Blue Ribbon Stables,” I said. “It’s the closest place to rent a horse.
“Why?” Desandra asked.
“Because I can’t keep up with you on foot,” I said.
“And she runs like a rhino.” Derek added. “You can hear her a mile away.”
Traitor. “I thought you had my back?”
“I do,” Derek said. “The rhino running is nice. Makes it easy to keep track of you. If I ever lose you, I just have to listen and there you are.”
“Yes,” Desandra agreed. “It’s convenient.”
I laughed.
“Are you always this casual?” Robert asked.
“Derek and I worked together for a long time,” I told him. “He’s allowed some leeway.”
“What about Desandra?”
“She only bothers with protocol when she wants something. The rest of the time it’s lewd jokes and descriptions of plums.”
Desandra snickered.
Robert’s eyebrows crept up. “Plums?”
I waved my hand. “Don’t ask.”

Kate is Great

I really enjoy this story line. Every character is this story is a strong character. This book is a continuation of Kate Daniels struggle. She finally meets her father and she determines that her life should be hers and she should live it the way she wants and not how others want her to live. I think there is a moral in there somewhere.

LilyElement Book Reviews - Magic Breaks

Any additional comments?

Kate Daniels returns in book seven of the Kate Daniels series. This time around Kate and Curran are back at the Keep and trying to prepare for what they know is going to come soon. Roland, Kate's father will come to take her out (and I don't mean to dinner) as soon as he finds out she is alive. Since they're unsure if Hugh survived the epic battle at the end of book six, they're just waiting and preparing as best they can. Curran is called away to join a hunt so Kate is left to attend a Conclave as the Alpha representing the pack. The Conclave is basically the top people from the pack and the top people from the People (vampires) sides meeting and discussing issues both have since the previous meeting. Low and behold, Hugh walks into the meeting and starts causing trouble. Let the cat and mouse game begin!

Hugh accuses one of the Pack of killing a high up member from the People. Now is the time for Kate and the gang to track down the crime scene and figure out who is behind the murder before the time runs out. Hot on the trail, Kate and a few others cross into dangerous territory in attempts to find out who is behind the murder and trying to stay alive in the process. And you know since Hugh is back and better than ever, Roland is not far behind...

Magic Breaks gives a warning at the beginning of the audiobook that this will read to be like the last book in the series. However it is NOT the last book, so don't be afraid, it does complete a major story arc though, which I was happy to see how that would turn out. I wasn't sure if everything was going to go up in flames when Kate met Roland, or what exactly would happen. It was pretty interesting read, and now I'm left wondering what the next major story arc be. All in all I'm adoring the audiobooks of this series, Renee Raudman's voice is perfect for Kate and the other characters. I highly suggest this series if you're looking for a paranormal book that will keep you on your toes.

Everything I wanted from this book.

This in an excellent conclusion to the story arc. For a fan of the series, this book is everything I expected, more than I thought possible and better than I could have hoped for.
I recommend not only this book, but the series as well. And also almost anything from Ilona Andrews.
