About this listen

In the North Pacific Ocean there is an island that has been forgotten by mankind. Living there are men who have committed all manner of moral crimes. Deceived by an elaborate ruse, they wake deep within fortress walls where they are tortured, brainwashed, and then trained to physical perfection. When they are finally released to the island's hills and abandoned streets, they are told one simple rule: Survive long enough and you will be sent home. The island's only other inhabitants are women.

In Man Hunt, survival of the fittest means being literally hunted. It is Lord of the Flies meets hard-core feminism, because it tells both sides of the story.

Intense

What made the experience of listening to Man Hunt the most enjoyable?

Intense story with brutal, raw descriptions of revenge, anger, terror, and outright hate. Makes you question your own feelings about torture, punishment, and redemption. Sometimes hard to accept the emotions this book evokes, but nonetheless, I couldn't wait to get back to it. The storytelling by Gwendolyn Druyer is superb.

I have never listened to any of Gwendolyn Druyor's other performances, but I thought she was fantastic on this one!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! (I couldn't put the print format down either!)

Any additional comments?

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review. I loved it, as well as the sequel. I can't wait for the 3rd book to come out!!

Overall, great narration and story line. The author does a great job describing the story to the point where I felt i was in the story. I could see a movie out of this book.

Excellent

I like that the story is dark and raw and keeps you wondering what's next.
The narrator is also very good.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great new series to get into!
I can't wait for more!

Intense psychological thriller/horror story

This is a unique and different story, a story of survival, guilt, revenge, remorse, choices, sexism, and healing of victims. The story is presented from two perspectives, allowing the readers to experience both points of you (and even possibly empathize with both).

The device of making the readers feel empathy for a perpetrator of a crime reminded me of dark writing of Edgar Allan Poe, and that's what made this story so enjoyable -- if you like horror and psychological thrillers.

The fact that the horror presented in the story is based on reality made it even more intense and emotional. The author doesn't shy away from heavy subjects. This book has torture, rape, murder, manipulation, and humiliation.

Gwendolyn Druyor did a great job narrating this book. Her pace is right, she articulates well, pauses in the right places, and makes the book easy to listen to because of her changes in tone and in character voices.

Dramatic and original

Great narrator! She added power to an already gripping story. The premise of this book seemed pretty wild. And the author grabs the reader from the very beginning. But “Man Hunt” by K A Fritz is not just a wild adventure, because throughout the back and forth between the sides, and evidenced by the differing perspectives of Obe and Josie, the author makes us think. There are powerful themes running deep in this story. To borrow the author’s words:

"Your first test will be survival, and your second test will be food, If you survive them both, you’ll have to learn the third test on your own. But if you pass that one, we will send you home."

It is a violent and disturbing story at times, one filled with tension, grit and suspense, one that is exciting to listen to - the narrator really helps define the characters with her acting voice. Overall this is highly entertaining and freshly original. At the end it is impossible not to instantly require the sequel – can’t wait! Highly recommended five stars.

Excellent interpretation of book

If you could sum up Man Hunt in three words, what would they be?

Intense, compulsive experience.

What other book might you compare Man Hunt to and why?

Well paced psychological thrillers where the character development is as important as the plot, such a Silence of the Lambs.

What does Gwendolyn Druyor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought two different women were narrating, her voice had a different tone when she was narrating the Women and their intricate psychological and physical torture then when she narrating the men trying to survive on the island.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Obe's ability to survive was always the most intense, it seems he cannot rise above his circumstances but he proves himself every time. I still wonder if he was one of the men who belonged on the island or somehow got swept up fro another man's actions.

Any additional comments?

I listened to the audio book the same way I read the novel, I meant to do it in spurts but wound up compulsively listening to the end.

Thinly disguised mysogynistic drivel

What disappointed you about Man Hunt?

I should have know better than to try to read this book from the description alone. Just... no. Many, many reasons, most of which deal with my anger at the thinly-veiled, monstrously mysogynistic writing. (One small example - attempting to make your audience feel sorry for a man who beat his girlfriend - but he was drunk, so, you know ...yes, sarcasm).

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gwendolyn Druyor?

She was fine - I just don't understand how a woman can read this in good conscience, even for money. I'm ashamed that I bought it.

What character would you cut from Man Hunt?

All of them.

wow, just wow

Would you try another book from K. Edwin Fritz and/or Gwendolyn Druyor?

I would not purchase another book from the author. The narrator did what she could

What was most disappointing about K. Edwin Fritz’s story?

It is hard to pick, but I would have to say that the story was the most disappointing thing.

What three words best describe Gwendolyn Druyor’s voice?

Unfortunately she over acted this one a bit. Otherwise she has a good cadence and delivery

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Man Hunt?

This had the feel of an unfinished product that I probably wouldn't have liked if it actually had decent pacing, progression and any type of ending.

Any additional comments?

It's ok to pick a social malady to expose and twist...but you have to have a story not simply a collection of bad stereotypes stumbling along
