About this listen

Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award

"One of the most intelligent, grimly funny voices to comment on life in present-day America" (The New York Times), Don DeLillo presents an extraordinary new novel about words and images, novelists and terrorists, the mass mind and the archindividualist.

At the heart of the book is Bill Gray, a famous reclusive writer who escapes the failed novel he has been working on for many years and enters the world of political violence, a nightscape of Semtex explosives and hostages locked in basement rooms. Bill's dangerous passage leaves two people stranded: his brilliant, fixated assistant, Scott; and the strange young woman who is Scott's lover - and Bill's.

The narrator did a great job of getting me through some difficult Obstacles in the novel, but much like other Dom Delillo audiobooks, you Really need the actual text to comprehend a vast amount of what the author is trying to do. It's not a book that's great for listening to in the car but still, quite an achievement!
As difficult as the novel can be at times, it always rewards me back double! Not as funny as his other books but such a prophetic novel, re: terrorists taking the place of writera in many respects, especially considering it was written a decade before 9/11!
Bill Gray was a Great JD Salinger double! Really something special. Like most Delillo books, more of a thesis than a plot but what ideas!!

Text Required but What A Treat!!!

Don Delillo is a solid writer that takes some getting used to. This is up there with Libra.

Classic DeLillo style and story, but falls a little short near the end. Still recommend if you are a fan of his work,

Solid but not his best
