About this listen
In answer to the question of what happened following her New York Times best seller Kabul Beauty School, Deborah Rodriquez is back with a new memoir.
Irreverent, insightful, and blatantly honest, Deborah takes us along on her inspiring journey of self-discovery and renewal after she is forced to flee Afghanistan in 2007. She first lands in California, where she feels like a misfit teetering on the brink of sanity. Where was that fearless redhead who stared danger in the face back in Kabul?
After being advised to commune with glowworms and sit in contemplation for a year, Rodriguez finally packs her life and her cat into her Mini Cooper and moves to a seaside town in Mexico. Despite having no plan, no friends, and no Spanish, a determined Rodriguez soon finds herself swept up in a world where the music never stops and a new life can begin. Her adventures and misadventures among the expats and locals help lead the way to new love, new family, and a new sense of herself.
In the magic of Mexico, she finds the hairdresser within and builds the life she never knew was possible - a life on her own terms.

When Katie Garrett gets the news that she’s received an inheritance from the grandmother she hardly knew, it couldn’t have come at a better time. She flees Boston and travels to rural Texas. There, she’s greeted by her distant cousin Scarlett. Friendly and flamboyant, Scarlett couldn’t be more different from sensible Katie. And as they begin the task of sorting through their grandmother’s possessions, they discover letters and photographs that uncover the hidden truths about their shared history, and the long-forgotten tragedy of the New London school explosion of 1937 that binds them.

In April 2002, Janine Latus' youngest sister, Amy, wrote a note and taped it to the inside of her desk drawer. "Today Ron Ball and I are romantically involved", it read, "but I fear I have placed myself at risk in a variety of ways. Based on his criminal past, writing this out just seems like the smart thing to do. If I am missing or dead this obviously has not protected me...."

Awakening!
Great read....even more so because I know Debbie and almost all the characters. Of corse this book fills in some of the gaps! She is a natural born teacher and shares her journey without any inhibition. It's called "life" and she has the guts and talent to tell her story. Through her words we can see glimpses of our own lives and through tears or laughter realize we are all just human. Thank you my dear friend!

Stay with it as she get her life Together abs the book takes off.
I enjoyed Beauty School in Kabul and hoping this would continue in the same vein. The author has a difficult few years but after some changes and finally settling in Mexico she finds her passion again life/romance & purpose. Highly recommended. Just stay with it till she finds herself. We’ve all been there.

Read with margarita in hand and heart open
It can work as a stand alone book but I read The Kabul Beauty School first and was blown away by Debbie. This did not disappoint. I love how open Debbie is with her emotions in this book and the obstacles she had to overcome some traumas from her past. It gives me confidence that I don’t need to have everything figured out and instead, trust yourself and the process. Would love to go to Mazatlan to check out her salon sometime!
