About this listen

Every advanced society in the galaxy relies on the technology of the Protheans, an ancient species that vanished 50,000 years ago. After discovering a cache of Prothean technology on Mars in 2148, humanity is spreading to the stars---the newest interstellar species, struggling to carve out its place in the greater galactic community.

On the edge of colonized space, ship commander and Alliance war hero David Anderson investigates the remains of a top secret military research station---smoking ruins littered with bodies and unanswered questions. Who attacked this post, and for what purpose? And where is Kahlee Sanders, the young scientist who mysteriously vanished from the base hours before her colleagues were slaughtered?

Sanders is now the prime suspect, but finding her creates more problems for Anderson than it solves. Partnered with a rogue alien agent he can't trust, and pursued by an assassin he can't escape, Anderson battles impossible odds on uncharted worlds to uncover a sinister conspiracy...one he won't live to tell about. Or so the enemy thinks.

This is a compelling and interesting addition to the Mass Effect story that I wish I could've gotten to hear before playing the games. Definitely a must listen for any fan!

Essential read

I'm not a gamer and wasn't aware of the videogames surrounding this book. If I'd known about the videogame link, I may have missed my chance to read this incredible series.
Book one is just..... wow. As soon as I finished it, I immediately began searching for anything else in this series.
The characters, the story, the excitement... everything is so well done. I truly hope that this is made into a sci-fi TV series. There are enough stories within stories that the possibilities are endless.
Excellent narration by David Colacci! Five stars all the way.

Wow! What a world!

Lots of cool character moments for players in ME 1 that didn't get enough development in the original game.

Enjoyable story, great addition to the Mass Effect universe

The story kept you wanting to know what happened next. I felt like I was in the universe of mass effect itself. Characters are interesting and fleshed out and the ending gave me Goosebumps. I only wished i was more invested in the characters but I would definitely recommend it.

Great for sci-fi fans

Great book for all game fans sci fi lovers

This wasn't a great title but it also wasn't bad. Honestly, the only reason I bothered is that I am a huge Mass Effect fan and I'm a sucker for anything that builds on that universe (which explains why I wasted money on Andromeda).

I think what really made this odd for me is that I already have an idea of how some of these characters talk and act from playing the games. It's unfair of me to expect the narrator to sound like the voice actors that voiced the game characters but I suppose I did anyway.

If you have never played Mass Effect and have no interest in that universe, then this book isn't for you. There is much better sci-fi out there.

Interesting Prequel

not sure if it would stand out much too someone who has never enjoyed the games. but for a fan of the mass effect universe this book is awesome. It gave me some answers I never knew I wanted until I listened to it.

Great for fans of Mass Effect!

Can safely and happily recommend. Lots of back story bits for supporting characters in the games. Slow at times but good. The narrator is no Matt Mercer but he does a good job.

Would you consider the audio edition of Mass Effect to be better than the print version?

I wouldn't exactly say that. But the audio version is indeed well-performed.
David Colacci is a good narrator and should do more novels like this.

What did you like best about this story?

I like how it gave some more backstory as to how the Mass Effect universe came to be.

Which character – as performed by David Colacci – was your favorite?

If I were to pick, probably Saren and Grissom.
He manages to be real close to Saren's menacing tone of voice and for Grissom does the grumpy old man tone very well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I know my son loves these books as much as this series as he's a major gamer.
I listened to this in one night and took a few pauses and breaks here and there. But it was worth staying up listening to it.

Any additional comments?

Nothing I can think of, no.

A great insight to where Mass Effect all began.
