About this listen

Los Angeles - Jake London's ideal teen life is thrown into chaos when he discovers the ability to control a swarm of shape-shifting nanotechnology that has, until recently, lain dormant in his DNA.

Mechcraft is the skill of controlling the nanotech and summoning and creating tools, weapons, and even machines.

Being the first ever born with the nanotech, warring factions desire to use him for their own sinister ends. Now, with two Mechcraft agents at his side and a horde of enemies chasing them down, Jake finds himself in a desperate race to safety.

Will agents Bex and Trent be able to keep Jake safe against relentless Sasha? What unique powers will Jake be able to manifest?

He could put an end to the decades-old faction war or be the destroyer of all Mechcrafters.

If Freddy Krueger Had Different Powers

I always enjoy seeing what people with creativity based mutant powers do when facing off against each other. So often those powers resolve as hammers and shields. This book kept me happy thinking about what I would do in those situations, surprising me and sometimes delighting me by doing exactly the same thing.

It was a good story and did a good job giving the main plot plenty of attention while giving us enough backstory to care. I really enjoyed the well thought out antagonist. That was a hard character to keep true to but those choices really paid off in the end in that they turned out to be my favorite character in the book. I felt very sympathetic to their cause as well as them as a character.

This book was very well narrated by Meghan Kelly and the voice she gave to the characters made the book come alive.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is a must have!

As a truck driver for over 25 years I have listen to literally thousands of audiobooks. I started listening way back when they were 'books on tape' and you occasionally had "smack the tape smartly on a flat surface" if wouldn't play correctly. So trust me when I say if you enjoy science fiction you need this book!
The author, to my understanding this is his first book, did an outstanding job creating characters that you care about and put them in situations that are exciting and gripping. I hope there still be more books.
The narrator of an audiobook can destroy a great story if done poorly or make a lackluster story become great. In this case I can honestly say I just found a narrator with a voice and delivery that if she read the phonebook to me I'd listen in rapt attention. A job very well done by both the author and the narrator!

Fantastic blow your mind listen

I see this is the authors first Audio. I also know that Brian has a winner on his hands. Brian takes a subject that is in the future and makes it into everyday life. It reminds me of Wolverine in X-Men how you take a person and bring out the natural side, DNA to the surface.
Meghan Kelly was phenomenal. She blew this out of the ball park. Meghan brought Brian’s works to live. Her voice is clear and the way she does the different characters is fantastic.

Hero is Jake

Jake one day is feeling weird. He has weird urges, only thing is he doesn’t know why . His urges are in his hands . Jake also notice that he is being followed but he doesn’t know why . Why is someone out to get him , for what ?

While that is happening there is a team of a male and female that tries to help him. They want to explain tomJake what is going on . When they explain to Jake and Jake understands it he knows how powerful he can be and what he can control.

Jake also wants to get back at the group that is trying to put him down.
It’s a MUST listen. Loved it

A magnificent read!

Will agents Bex and Trent be able to keep Jake safe against relentless Sasha?
What unique powers will Jake be able to manifest?

What an amazing, enjoyable, interesting and magnificent read! I so got lost in this book right from the beginning - so hooking and compelling. The story draws you in, the narrator draws you in and you never want to leave this book - ever.

Such an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

The narrator definitely did a remarkable job of narrating this book - I got so engrossed in it that I forgot I am multitasking.

Good story and good narration

I enjoyed this audiobook. The story was well written and the narration was adequately performed by Meghan Kelly. If I had one criticism of each is that the story is about a teenage kid coming into puberty and into his powers at the same time, yet there is some mild cursing in it that would keep me from letting my own children and grandchildren listen to it. The narration was generally well done but I would like to have heard more of a sense of urgency when the battle scenes were taking place. Aside from these two things I found the book quite satisfying and easily worth the four stars for both author and narrator. I do indeed recommend this book.

Enjoyed!

The idea of being able to be injected with nanotech is beyond my scope of imagination. This is why we have excellent writers like Brian Fitzpatrick around! The cool idea of these nanotechs being able to be manipulate them to do your bidding...well...I would sign up for it, for sure!
The writing is excellent. The characters are well developed and believable and the way the story flows is fast paced and will grab you from the first!
I listened to the audio book version of this and, I have to admit, Meghan Kelly is the reason I picked it up. She is one of my favorite narrators. Her characters are spot on and consistent. The flow of the narration allows for the listener to forget they are being read to.
Give it a go, you won't be disappointed! I am hoping there will be a book 2!

Mechcraft .... Great Listen

Mechcraft by Brian Fitzpatrick
Narrated by Meghan Kelly
Five Stars
I have to say this is not my usual genre, but I was really impressed with the storyline and concept. The story was full of action and held my attention throughout. I’m definitely looking forward to read more from Brian Fitzpatrick in the future. Meghan Kelly did a wonderful job on the narration. The story flowed from beginning to end. If you love YA SciFi or even if you are looking for something different this is the book for you!

More Urban Fantasy than Science Fiction

Some individuals were injected with nanobots as an experiment. The results were unexpected, and several factions with incompatible views arose from this. Jake is the first human born from two parents who were injected, he is an unknown, and this is why the three factions are fighting to get him.

I have read so many good things about this book that I was looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately, it was not my cup of tea. I found the plot to be more on the urban side fantasy than science-fiction side. The science in the book involves nanobots but the physics and biology are so far fetched that it really tested my willing suspension of disbelief. It could have been a good story though, the world-building was interesting and original enough but I would have liked it to have been more developed. I just did not buy the hunters’ autodestructive view or why they were so fixated on Jake. I also had issues understanding some of the character’s actions, and could not relate to any of them. I see the appeal of this book to some young readers, but it just was not for me. My main issue is that I found a lack of motivation behind the events in the book, and this prevented me from fully getting into the story.

I also had serious issues with Meghan Kelly’s narration. The characters’ interpretations were good, and their voices were distinctive, but the rest of the narrative was done in a way that gave the impression that Kelly was whispering. Even action scenes were performed this way, which I found terribly distracting, and I struggled to keep my attention on the book, as I kept zoning out constantly. There were also clear volume differences between these parts and the dialogues, which did not help. There is a repeated sentence around 2:34:07.

I do not want people to be put off by this review. Again, I have read great things about this book, it was just not for me.

Wow! I absolutely loved this book!

I was hooked right from the beginning & had a hard time taking a break to do things. After I read the book & saw Brian had released the audible book, I just had to have it. I think I enjoyed the audible book better because of the great job Meghan did in narrating the story. Bravo, Brian! Can't wait for the next book. (It blows my mind that you are able to come up with all the details involved in the story. Amazing!)
