About this listen

A collection of the most memorable moments from old-school rural physicians who each practiced medicine for more than 50 years in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Hilarious, heroic, heartwarming true stories of miracle cures, ghost dogs, and much madcap medical mayhem. Jourdan's work is often compared to James Herriot and Bill Bryson. Her first book is on hundreds of lists of best books of the year, best book club books, and funniest books.

Very well done. Entertaining and moves at a good pace. As an RN for many years it was easy to relate to doctors and patients. In fact, I listened twice to the book . Thanks for an enjoyable book.

True stories of country doctors in the mountains. A gem that will leave a smile on your face. I am blessed to live in the paradise of the Blue Ridge Mountains and I still see many of the characteristics described in this book in my neighbors.

James Heriot for good people. You will be happy you read this book

A bonafidentribute to heroes

Loved it! God Bless these doctors for they are truly God's gift to us. They aren't in medicine to make the money and become rich.

Excellent Book

This was not as humorous as I expected. I actually liked the one liners better than most of the stories. I'm not sure why I didn't connect with this book; maybe there were too many stories with minimal detail about the people involved. The male narrator threw me when it was supposed to be in the female author's voice.

Mediocre for Me

nonfiction, audiobook, medical, rural, short-stories
Comprised of numerous reminiscences from multiple country doctors preferring to practice in the backwoods of Appalachia from the 1920's till fairly recently. With minimal alterations, the incidents could be backwoods NSW, Minnesota/Wisconsin, or Alberta. But then, I've been a nurse since the Revolutionary War (or at least the reenactments). I absolutely loved it!
For some idiotic reason this Whispersync has been hiding in my TBR pile since March 2016!
Carey Jones is perfect as narrator.
