Publisher's summary

It was a time of crisis, a time of tragedy - and a time of transcendent courage and determination. Leon Uris’s blazing novel is set in the midst of the ghetto uprising that defied Nazi tyranny, as the Jews of Warsaw boldly met Wehrmacht tanks with homemade weapons and bare fists. Here, painted on a canvas as broad as its subject matter, is the compelling story of one of the most heroic struggles of modern times.

An Amazing Story.

Too bad that the world can be such an awful place that this amazing story of courage and perserverance even has to be told (albeit through fictionalized characters). Yet, the worst in some people always seems to bring out the greatness in others. So very sad that the world has all but forgotten both the Nazi's hideous destruction of the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and the heroic effort of the Jews to stop tyranny while the rest of the world silently looked on and chose to wilfully ignore what was happening until the end of the war. As has been said, those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. Therefore, it is no surprise to see the rise again in Europe of the way too far right and it's associated anti-Semitism. For this reason alone books like this one from Leon Uris, as well as his Exodus should be assigned reading in all middle school classes throughout the world; but especially in Europe where they just never seem to learn.

It is important to read and study the history and historical fiction of WWII. We MUST NEVER forget how humanity fought evil fir freedom and dignity.

fascism and it's consequences of hate.

A praise of the Holocaust victims, their struggle to survive and to resist the actions of the fascist birds, and the complicit indifference of others.

Brilliance in its truest form

When you feel the pain of the characters, you know the writing is superb . It’s the pain brought upon the Jews by the nazis that tear at the readers heart, and the fear that mankind can possess such evil inclinations.

A masterpiece by Leon Uris. Masterfully voiced by David deVries.

This is a story that is very hard to hear but one that must be heard in these times. David deVries’s performance was amazing. He brought each character to vivid life. Why this story hasn’t been made into a major motion picture is beyond me. It is a story of good and evil, love and hate, cowardice and great courage. It tells a heartbreaking story of events that we must never forget.

Heartbreakingly recounted historical novel

Clearly narrated history to give lessons hopefully never to be repeated by any group or nation. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Poor narration ruins good story

This is a review of the audiobook. I have enjoyed the story, and I loved Exodus, but this story moves fairly slow early on. The bigger issue is the narrator. Someone should have told him this was not a movie. The narration is so melodramatic and so over-the-top, it substantially detracts from the story. If you can handle the narration, it’s worth listening to. Or maybe just go old school and read it yourself.

Beautifully written

This book stands the test of time and is an excellent accounting of what happened in Warsaw during WWII and the Warsaw uprising. Very well narrated and we must never forget what happened.
