Publisher's summary

S.C. Perkins' Murder Once Removed is the captivating first mystery in the Ancestry Detective series, in which Texas genealogist Lucy Lancaster uses her skills to solve murders in both the past and present.

Except for a good taco, genealogist Lucy Lancaster loves nothing more than tracking down her clients’ long-dead ancestors, and her job has never been so exciting as when she discovers a daguerreotype photograph and a journal proving Austin, Texas, billionaire Gus Halloran’s great-great-grandfather was murdered back in 1849. What’s more, Lucy is able to tell Gus who was responsible for his ancestor’s death.

Partly, at least. Using clues from the journal, Lucy narrows the suspects down to two 19th-century Texans, one of whom is the ancestor of present-day US senator Daniel Applewhite. But when Gus publicly outs the senator as the descendant of a murderer - with the accidental help of Lucy herself - and her former co-worker is murdered protecting the daguerreotype, Lucy will find that shaking the branches of some family trees prove to be more twisted and dangerous than she ever thought possible.

Genealogy Fun

Being a genealogy nut myself I did enjoy the story for that reason. I like finding "stories" about my ancestors and of course my husband's too. The murder story line was well told and I wish our families had been diary keepers.

Thoroughly enjoyable mystery

This book was delightful. I loved the location (Austin, Texas) and the characters. Lucy Lancaster is a genealogist who uncovers a murder in the past. Once this is made public things spiral out of control. Filled with fun secondary characters and life in Austin it is a fun read. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to the next Lucy Lancaster mystery.

Cozy his story mystery

Perkins Has brought us a wonderful new cozy mystery. Lucy has discovered a the answer to a hundred year old family mystery which in turn has brought about a new mystery in. She also has to deal with the hunky special FBI agent turner who she has some great chemistry with. After reading this book he will want to look up the genealogy of your own family.

Genealogist-in-training approved

If you enjoy genealogy, mysteries, and tacos, then you’ll like this. Only thing that really bothered me was that the narrator did not say “San Jacinto” the Texan way... so that made me twitch at least 3-4 times. Also, made me really crave tacos more than usual.

Wonderfully woven story

I was fully engaged with this story from start to finish. All of the characters were interesting and well developed. The use of genealogical and historical research was artfully handled — adding to rather than distracting from the story. I’m looking forward to reading the next in this series.

Well written, light-hearted (if there is such a thing with a murder mystery) book. Great narrator-I give it five star & two thumbs up

Murder once removed

Loved it! Being a genealogy buff myself for the past 14 years is what drew me to try out this book. I'm happy to say that the author has a loyal new fan. I liked Lucy and her quirky friends. I could totally relate when she had a "Eureka" moment in her research. I enjoyed the twists and turns between the past and present. This story was light hearted and serious. Even if you're not into genealogy, it is still an entertaining book.

Pretty good but...

The story is interesting but the pace is too slow. I might get the next one.

Tacos and murder

I enjoyed the narrator. I have tried a couple of times to start the print book but never got too far, so listening was the best choice for me.
Lucy Lancaster is an interesting character. She loves her tacos and goes deep on genealogy. It’s interesting how the author brings a historical murder into having present day relevance.
Now I need some tacos.
