About this listen

New Jersey, 1928.

A 14-year-old boy disappears from his home without a trace - almost forever. Ninety years later, a series of chance DNA matches reveals what became of him. John had to grow up quickly - changing his identity, earning a living, and navigating love, friendship, and death during some of the toughest times in American history.

With nothing more than an eighth-grade education, his journey takes us through Prohibition, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the gold mines of Colorado, and the Second World War to eventually become a success in his own right.

A semi-fictional account, based on a true story, Michael Schoenholtz blends genealogical research with historical fiction as he tracks the mysterious disappearance of his long-lost uncle who forged a seamless new identity to hide his darkest secret.

"A fast-paced, adeptly told story." (Syril Levin Kline, author)

Entertaining but not a lot of genealogy

Interesting imagining of what may have happened to a lost relative!

I was hoping to learn a little more about the genealogical research and DNA journey that enabled John to be identified as Isadore. Maybe one day there will be an expanded version of this short book.

Excellent story!

On a long road trip I found this story. I do genealogy research for my husband's family as well as my own. most of us will have a road block or a missing person of mystery. mine was my own Grandmother who passed in 1957. My hasband has a mystery great grandfather. The author has done a wonderful job of blending fact and fictional possibilities through story. and with such respect. the only negative was that it was too short! LOL 😂 it was only a couple of hours of entertainment but it was EXCELLENT and totally worth the credit!!!
Than you, Michael Schoenholtz for sharing you research and story!

I did not realize this based on a real person!

Such a good story and the narrator did an amazing job! I would listen to him again.
