About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A village of secrets
It's December 1952, and a dead stranger has been found lodged up the chimney of Holly House in the remote town of Elderby. Is he a simple thief, or a would-be killer? Either way, he wasn't on anyone's Christmas wish list.

A mystery that can't be solved
Inspector Frank Grasby is ordered to investigate. The victim of some unfortunate misunderstandings, he hopes this case will help clear his name. But as is often the way for Grasby, things most certainly don't go according to plan.

A Christmas to remember
Soon blizzards hit the North York Moors, cutting off the village from help, and the local doctor's husband is found murdered. Grasby begins to realise that everyone in Elderby is hiding something - and if he can't uncover the truth soon, the whole country will pay a dreadful price...

Cute, enjoyable, and riddled with dry humor and murder most foul! If you’re looking for a period piece, this will definitely be a great read.

Enjoyable!

I loved this book! I love stories that take place in quaint English villages! I also love it when the author uses proper English as the main character did. I thought this book was quite funny also, I found myself laughing throughout the entire book. I love historical fiction, especially with some espionage included. I really can’t say anything bad about this book. The Narration was excellent too!

This is a fun story. The humor is sparkling, almost as much as the wit. It’s been a long time since I came across a story with so much easy humor working ceaselessly in the background - uplifting and completely unforced. Now that is a rarity. In addition to being well-written, it is also narrated beautifully. Enjoyed every minute of it. One little caveat - it felt more like lessons in espionage rather than a narrative about an absorbing mystery. That said, it is absorbing in every way of its own.

Funny find…

Great unexpected story and characters. Very different from his other books. Great narrator! I just loved it! Looking forward to the next stories. Thank you!

WHAT A GREAT FIND!

It was boring to begin with and the humor wasn't very humorous. It got interesting as the plot finally started to pick up speed but it didn't last long. It went from interesting to silly to downright ridiculous by the end. I won't be reading any sequels.

Two stars is probably generous
