About this listen

From Anne Cleeland comes a captivating new mystery series following the perilous exploits of two Scotland Yard detectives as they track down London's most elusive killers.

First-year detective Kathleen Doyle is a plucky Irish redhead of humble origins and modest means. Chief Inspector Michael Acton is her antithesis: a British lord turned cop. He's tall, handsome, and enigmatic - to a fault. He also has a knack for solving London's most high-profile crimes. Acton selects Doyle out of the newbie squad to partner with him on a series of investigations because she always knows when someone is lying - a trait that comes in handy when interviewing suspects and witnesses.

Acton and Doyle are sent to investigate the murder of a trainer at a racetrack, and soon new killings related to the first start unfolding, dragging the two investigators into ever more perilous situations. But the real danger is the unlikely attachment that develops between the ultra-reserved, aristocratic chief inspector and his spirited, working-class sidekick... a relationship that will raise plenty of eyebrows - and hackles - among their colleagues at the Yard.

5 Star Story

Would you listen to Murder in Thrall again? Why?

I would enjoy nothing more then
Iistening to Murder in Thrall. The story is great and very well written. I can't wait for the next book! I really hope there is a next book!

Which character – as performed by Marcella Riordan – was your favorite?

The reading took a chapter or two to get adjusted too. But once more characters were introduced she hit her stride.

Performance good, story not so much.

While the narrator was very good at portraying the feelings and intent behind the words, I was not super impressed with the story. The central romance was a little disturbing in the implications. Not exactly the picture of a healthy relationship and I guess it just didn't suit my idea of romance and so ruined the rest of the book for me.

Great story except for ending; too much sex though

I loved the narration with the Irish brogue. Intriguing story. But disposal of dead body at end not believable. Also more discussion about sex than needed

Creepy but mesmerizing

Couldn't stop listening once I started. Lots of sexual tension, but no soft/or hard-core porn.

3 and and a half

Implausable, very disturbing situation with male and female protagonists, interesting narrative perspective, should be a real stinker, but I enjoyed it, listened to it again a week later. Still disturbing, as in an "Every Breath You Take" way.

I'm sure some women still believe stalking=devotion=love. Again, should be a stinker but I enjoyed it.

You may become addicted to Cleeland and Riordan

This story is a creative blend of genres—mystery, romance, psychological thriller. I occasionally noted problems in the storyline, which didn't keep me from getting completely immersed and nearly addicted to the book. The main character, kathleen Doyle, is an almost flawless person whose ability to know when people are lying makes her seem naive. Still I couldn't help but like her. Beware, you may not be able to resist going on to read the entire series. And Marcella Riordan's narration is wonderful, great accents and clear distinction between characters, their thoughts, and the narrative. I could escape into a very interesting and oddly comforting world.

Mediocre

The narrator did a good job with this one but the storyline was a tad creepy - the murder line was alright but the relationship between Acton and Doyle I felt was really weird. I dont know that I will be trying any more - if there are any more Acton and Doyle novels

I love this series

Maybe it's because the reader does such a great job, or maybe it's because of the odd nature of the characters, but I love this odd mystery series so far.
