About this listen

When a biological weapon decimates the population, Julie feels...relieved.

To her, the apocalypse doesn’t seem any more dangerous than navigating the world before when she spent all her energy trying to avoid the treachery of human beings. Years of abuse have left her broken in some way, unable to trust. The dangers of the new world force her to barricade herself in the safety of her house, which also feels familiar since she’s been doing the emotional equivalent for years. Alone with her dog and the murmurations—an inexplicable phenomenon that’s been with her as long as she can remember—Julie gets by as she always has, through a combination of luck and grit.

But when her solitude is shattered by the arrival of strangers, Julie is forced to decide if she wants to live rather than just survive, and whether it’s too late to unearth her humanity now that most of humanity is gone.

The book grabs you and has some twists and turns, but ultimately it became a book about relationships. I became invested in the characters in this book. I really enjoyed the story. Very well done! The narration was great too!

Great book/ great narration

Like the title says, I had been in a book slump. Could not connect to any story. Even tried going back and rereading favourites from years past. Did not work.

Until this book. It started a bit slow but once it hit its stride, yowza. I was up until 2:30am listening one night because I HAD to find out what happened next.

I enjoyed the narrator. Her even measured tone really conveyed the protagonist’s personality and the weight of her history. She did a great job switching voices. I became so engrossed in the story, I forgot it was just one person narrating all the voices.

A big part of me hopes this book gets a sequel. I want to know more about the characters’ journeys and what happens next. A smaller part of me doesn’t because I don’t want the characters to suffer any more, heh.

It’s been a while since I’ve been this invested in a story. Thank you Teri & Tanya for getting me out of my book slump. I will be looking for other works by you both.

Got me out of a book slump

I wanted to like this book. I listened to the first 3rd of it in one sitting. It drew me right into the story. But then it got exceedingly dark and rather long and drawn out. I hated the ending. The narrator was decent but the plot was just too unbelievable for me, fiction or no. Dark, empty and left me wishing I could scrub it from my mind permanently. I kept listening thinking it would get better but it never did. Totally not worth listening too.

Not too great
