Publisher's summary

Everybody has a secret. Some are more dangerous than others.

For Georgina Wilcox, the only child of the notorious traitor known as "The Fox", there are too many secrets to count. However, after her interference results in great tragedy, she resolves to never help another...until she meets Adam Markham.

Lord Adam Markham is captured by The Fox. Imprisoned, Adam loses everything he holds dear. As his days in captivity grow, he finds himself fascinated by the young maid, Georgina, who cares for him.

When the carefully crafted lies she has built between them begin to crumble, Georgina realizes she will do anything to prove her love and loyalty to Adam - even it means at the expense of her own life.

compelling story

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend the book; however, I agree that it took too long for Adam (supposed a smart, through agent for the crown), to figure out that Georgina was not a traitor. AND she should have told him from the beginning if you ask me.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was compelling and it was a story that you wanted to see to the end, except, you got impatient with the getting there. I did buy the book so, I skipped through some of the tedious parts and fast forwarded the audible parts I did not want to spend an hour or 30 minutes listening too.

What does Tim Campbell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I am a fan of Tim Campbell's audible renditions and fortunately, he is the narrator for many of may favorite novels. The characters are rendered as they should bess

To Love a Spy

Would you listen to My Lady of Deception again? Why?

No - I've already read the book and it was good to hear it but there are so many good books out there to spend time re-listening

Who was your favorite character and why?

Georgina - she had such a hard life and just when it seems like things are looking up her life takes a big downhill turn

Have you listened to any of Tim Campbell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've never listened to any of his performances before but will be keeping an eye of for them in the future

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I listen in the car so it takes me quite a while to complete a book

Any additional comments?

This is the first Historical Romance that I have heard with a male narrator - it added an interesting depth to the story

Took three times to get through this book

Love Christi Caldwell, but this book is not among my favorites. Tried to "read" it before and just couldn't handle it. Still not sure why. Tried again. Same thing. SO tried this last time, determined to do it and I did, but still didn't "like" it much. Think the beginning too contrived and unrealistic. Not sure that is why, though. I guess I am glad I read it, but not sure why when I didn't enjoy it.

SPOILERS.. MAYBE..

Any additional comments?

WOW! Talk about being able to hate someone and wishing them dead. CC really made that easy when it same to Georgina’s father and Jamie. They were too horrible for words and when they beat her you just wanted to reach into the book and save her. That’s some good writing. I couldn’t figure out who was the most insane, her father or Jamie, but they were both mean and vicious when it came to “punishing” her.

Eventually, Adam found out who Georgina’s father was and, of course, here’s a misunderstanding that will probably go on for the rest of the book. After all, I’m only at 59% and the angst is about to start. UGH. I really do have to stop buying these 300+ page books. They are just too frustrating.

At 80% Georgina left her maid at home, which she was told NOT to do, and snuck out to meet that miserable creature Jamie and when said creature told her to get in his carriage IF she cared for her husband, she went! Really? This was her second TSTL episode within minutes of each other: first leaving the maid then thinking for a minute that her big strong husband needed her to protect him. Wow! And I have 20% more of this book to go?

Geez! At 85% she just stands there with Jamie telling his lies and Adam believes it and tells them both to go. She doesn’t even try to stand up for herself. It’s going to be tough finishing this book. I don’t know how this book got so many 4 and 5 star reviews. Must be readers who love books filled with angst.

I have to agree with reviewer Kelly. This was way too angsty. And it lasted until the end of the story. I will admit it was a good story but it would have been better if it had been shorter. It was too long for Adam to find out she wasn’t a traitor and even longer for him to win her back. He groveled too long.

I did like the players, Nick, Tony, Stone, Archer, Nurse Catherine and the Duke of Aubrey.

There wasn’t any sexual tension in this story buy several good sex scenes.

I got this book through KU.

As to the narrator: I had never listened to Tim Campbell but he was wonderful. The good guys were sooo sexy and the bad guys were terrible sounded, just as it should be. AND the women sounded just like women. You can't ask for more than that.

The historical detail was enlightening..

The characters were frustrating. They should have been better developed. So just OK overall. The family of lord could have been fleshed out to understand.

Loved It!

There were moments of laughter, sadness, tears, disgust, annoyance, anger and, ultimately, happiness. Once again, Christi & Tim work their Dynamic Duo magic to bring life to the characters in her stories. When you don't want a story to end, that's the sign of an awesome story. I'm on to the next one...RIGHT NOW! 😊

Pretty Good, Could Have Been So Much Better

The premise behind this story is good, but it didn't have enough depth for me. One thing I can say is, you didn't know who to trust. I hope the next book is a lot better. Tim Campbell is great.

too much misery to be romantic

Would you try another book from Christi Caldwell and/or Tim Campbell?

yes, but maybe not this series. I have read/listened to books by both and have liked them, but CC is getting on my nerves with weak female characters.

Would you ever listen to anything by Christi Caldwell again?

not this series. I think this book was filled with characters that did not behave consistantly. Both H/H "worked" for the crown/were spies, but they were so stupid and unaware of others that it was difficult to believe that they could have survived.
The reviews indicate the heroine was strong/brave. Her situations were caused by her stupidity. She lied, didn't follow directions and w,en she had the chance to tell the truth/clarify a situation just ended up stuttering . If the author can't write dialogue for women, maybe she should not write romances. A woman just stuttering her rway through violence/problems is neither strong or brave. This is a doormat having all the men around her pull her into one circumstance after another.

Which scene was your favorite?

The end. I was just happy it was over and all the misunderstandings stopped.

What character would you cut from My Lady of Deception?

The two main characters. They were just so depressing. Very little was happy in this book.

Any additional comments?

I think this book had potential, but it became a series of love scenes (which did not align with the weak character of the heroine) with a suspense thrown in. I have come to hate the " angel out of bed/harlot in bed" characterization. The passion and intensity along with courage if just displayed in bed by the H/H. Every where else they are distant and disconnected from each other.
