Publisher's summary

Rahl, a young apprentice scrivener on the island of Recluce, likes life to work out in his favor. And he has a bad attitude, too. To make sure things go his way, he uses a small amount of order magic at opportunistic moments - but his abilities are starting to get the attention of the Council magisters. So the Council sends him to the mage training school for testing, and through misuse of his powers, which are getting stronger all the time, Rahl gets himself banished to the continent and empire of Hamor.

As an exile in Hamor, working in the Ordermage Council's import and export business, Rahl's powers increase - and so does the amount of trouble he can get into.

Critic reviews

"Modesitt renders the people and places of Recluce and Hamor somewhat humorlessly but with diligent attention to detail, treading the narrow line between exquisite world-building and overbearing verbosity." ---Publishers Weekly

Very good

I have loved all the books in this series except the ones that dealt with the white wizards. This book is so well wrote that it paints a vivid movie in ones mind that one does not want to stop listening even to sleep.

Excellent story

As usual with this series, the beginning of a new character story is slow to start. It’s kind of the author’s theme, but it got really good and enjoyable.

Another awesome read/listen.

The combination of content and narrator makes listening to the book very entertaining. I recommend the series to everyone that I know that enjoys fantasy books.

a good story

Modesitt gives us another great story of a gifted Recluce Mage trying to learn & find out where he fits in best in that world. Modesitt artfully weaves many real-life issues into his stories, making them interesting as well as thought provoking.
Heyborne narrates so well. His acting & voices bring me right into the scene so I'm totally immersed in the action. I listen while I'm working in my studio & my day is often over before I realize the passage of time.
I'm really interested and eager to experience how Modesitt will finally reconcile the similarities and differences between the black & white mages. When he finally does, (and there is no hurry so long as great stories continue to emerge), well, those novels will be quite amazing!
