About this listen

CJ Lyons’ experience as an ER physician lends her New York Times best-sellers a sense of gritty realism. Nerves of Steel introduces Dr. Cassandra Hart, a Pittsburgh ER doctor who discovers that her very own hospital is the source of a deadly street drug. When her best friend is murdered and Cassie starts getting death threats, she must trust Detective Mickey Drake to protect her. Yet even as a passionate love affair blossoms between them, a relentless killer draws ever closer.

Good story and great characters.

it was the perfect mix of suspense and romance. you could see why the characters were together but it didn't overshadow the story or make it unrealistic.

Nerves of steel

Oh boy! There is so much action in this book, never a dull moment. Police, doctors and bad guys that are all strong characters keep the story interesting.

horrible narration, ruined book

Every emotion sounded the same, no situation was stressful, exciting or scary because narrator drones on and on in a monotone that was only separated by pauses in the middle of sentences and super long pauses at the end of each sentence. It was the worst narration I've ever heard and I will not listen to another book read by him.

It's hard to rate the book because the narration was so bad but the storyline was the only reason I kept listening so it was interesting enough to tolerate the droning narration.

More fraught romance than mystery

I've read other titles by Dr. Lyons and enjoyed them. However, this tale is more fraught romance than mystery. After too many chapters of too many minutes of breathy dialog, it's time to give up. There are too many mysteries waiting to be read.

Entertaining

This was a moderately entertaining book. Parts of it seemed unrealistic to me. I know, I know. It's fiction, but still. You may not want to read further in case this gives too much away, although I'll try to limit that. Hart was an abused wife, and physician, who divorced her husband, also a physician. Yet he keeps turning up in her life and terrorizing her, both at work and at home. But she doesn't seem to take actions to prevent this. No complaints to hospital management or to the legal system until very near the end of the book. Also, she at least once arrives home to find him hiding there, waiting to accost and abuse her. But how did he get in? The front door was locked and there's no other evidence described of breaking in anywhere in the house. In the hospital in which they both work, he keeps accosting her physically and somehow no one is ever around to notice.

Dr. Hart also is a trained martial artist, and she gets into fights with low-lifes in her one-person, late-night investigations to identify one of her patients. At one point she is thrown over a bridge railing, but manages to catch her full weight on the tips of her fingers and hang there until she is rescued. Really. Is this possible for anyone to catch their full weight on the tips of their fingers?---not just to hang, but to catch their uncontrolled full falling weight?

So, a person of poor judgement and unrealistic skills.

But if you suspend disbelief and just read it for the series of events, if you happen to be entertained by the characters and their interactions, you still might enjoy the story. It just wasn't enough for me.
