About this listen

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The author of Nowhere for Very Long continues her story with this deeply honest, moving account of a woman walking the line between independence and isolation when she moves to the Southwest desert with nothing and no one but her four dogs.

In her debut memoir, Nowhere for Very Long, Brianna Madia reflected on her life as a nomad, free to roam some of the most beautiful land in America. Now, in Never Leave the Dogs Behind, the van life adherent faces the unfathomable darkness that comes from a life blown apart, her only solace the support of her dogs.

In the wake of a painful, public divorce and the ensuing fallout, Brianna moves from a pared-down van into a pared-down trailer. She reckons with her decision to be alone in the desert, living on a nine-acre plot of undeveloped land on the dusty outskirts of a small town in Utah, accompanied only by her four precious dogs: Bucket, Dagwood, Birdie, and Banjo. As she grapples with the anger, despair, and delicious freedom that comes from being wholly on her own, Brianna wonders where, exactly, the road less traveled has led her.

A powerful and poignant portrait of rebuilding and surviving, Never Leave the Dogs Behind is about finding the courage to start over when the dream life you thought you were living collapses around your feet.

Must love dogs

This 2nd memoir was a great road trip listen. I listened to them back to back. As a dog lover I could appreciate every moment with her furry friends. As a Mom my heart broke for her by her involvement with public judgment.

Honest, real, and so beautiful

Listening to this felt as though I was sitting down with an old friend and a glass of wine while she recapped on her life over the years. Brianna has this beautiful ability to stay true and transparent throughout even the hardest of topics. Her performance while reading some of the darkest, most heart breaking details of her life is gut wrenching and honest, you can’t help but feel as if you know her. I could not stop reading once I started so, clear you day and gab those tissues - you’ll need them!

Courage

I have followed her for years on IG, albeit, I’m not a super active SM member. I have passed by her on roads and envied, what I perceived, as her wild, adventurous heart. Not more than I envied her turquoise collection and a certain pair of boots, however. As that person, I saw the rise and the fall from afar. I’m sickened by the cowardice online bulling combined with grief that sent her to her brink. It takes courage to survive our story. It takes more courage to tell it with whole hearted honesty. It takes the most courage to rise again.

Truly Moving and Inspiring

I listened to this book in one entire sitting, just as I did with NFVL. Although this book had a much heavier tone in most parts, I found myself moving through all steps of grief, feeling every emotion as Bri dictated them. I have been a long-time follower of Bri and watched her seemingly wither away online as her life was unraveling. This book outlines a very raw look into a small fraction of her life, yet is so relatable despite my world of “normal” is contrast to hers. This book has you feeling deep emotions- sorrow, pain, grief, laughter, joy, rage, empathy, sympathy…literally every emotion. To say I feel proud of someone who I don’t even know is an understatement. Through this book, you get a small glimpse and reminder of the power of words, and silent struggles other human beings endure. I cannot wait for the next book. With each comes a new revelation, lesson and set of feelings that you can’t explain in words. I’m honored to be part of a group of supporters, and listeners/readers, that allows us all connect with a complete stranger on a deeper than human level. Great read!

honest, raw, adventurous!

I’ve always wondered how Bri had the courage to live so truly to the things she loves. The desert. The wild. The freedom. She is brave and human and this book was such a beautiful addition to her first. Her journey of healing.

Poignant memoir

Life is not necessarily easy or happy but most people pretend. Pretend that they don’t have anxiety, depression, sadness etc. I speak from experience. My dog gives me unconditional love, I live in the Pacific Northwest. Sell my suburban house & take care of the many details. The idea of living in an undeveloped, beautiful area with a bunch of dogs sounds heavenly.

Seemed unfinished somehow.

Reading this book made me feel as though I missed a lot in her first book. Now I need to read the first book, NFVL, to understand the author better. Also, the ending made me wonder what happened to the author and her 4 dogs. To me, she was still at risk for self harm. Nothing had really been resolved. Though it was clear she loved her fur babies, she still did not really love herself. Oneline trolls can be so cruel. That's why I barely go on Facebook. It's sad, because some of those online sites could be so helpful in dealing with loneliness. Anyway, this author wrote a good book. I look forward to reading her next book.
