About this listen

How do you explain Liz Phair? Looking at her career, the word fearless seems the right place to start. In Never Said Nothing, the latest in Audible’s Words + Music series, Phair charts her unlikely journey from making her first record - one that’s now ensconced on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” - to a trial by fire (she’d never set foot on stage before its release), to even more improbably, a second and a third, maybe fourth act, depending on how one counts these things.

In this honest and disarming look inside her unique career, Phair talks of how her meteoric rise was accompanied by an equally intense case of the dreaded imposter syndrome, discovering music’s strange magic, and her possibly unique ability to chart her future through songs. Although she includes herself in the class of "ordinary people doing extraordinary things", listening to Never Said Nothing, along with her performances - which include "6’1”", “Polyester Bride”, and “Stars and Planets” - one can’t help but feel that "fearless person doing extraordinary things" is the better description.

About the Creator and Performer

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter. Guitar-playing virtuoso. Feminist trailblazer. Author. Game-changer. Disrupter. Visual artist. Icon. That is a lot of words for one person, but Liz Phair has earned them. It all started back in the early ‘90s with deeply clever and often brutally candid songs laid down on a cassette player in her bedroom. Those songs became Exile in Guyville, an album that now resides on Rolling Stone’s "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Not a bad start.
As if to confirm her genius, Phair proved creatively restless, confounding expectations by creating pop-leaning masterpieces like "Why Can’t I," only to pivot again towards hip-hop with 2010’s Funstyle. If Phair’s career has had a governing philosophy, we might take it as this: Hold to the center, swing around. With her new album, Soberish—her first collection of new, original music in a decade—Phair remains playful, inquisitive, uncompromising, but anchored. The center can still hold.

Great quality audio + great quality thoughts

So glad this came out! A good variety of songs from throughout her career (wish something from Funstyle was performed), but overall this was a fun listening experience!

My kinda girl

Hey, Liz. In the early 90’s I was rocking with your music in the East Village. You set that perfect tone for me then, and I so enjoyed your 50+ wisdom now. I love hearing your truth, process, and some of the ridiculous things that happened during these days. You’re smart, open, and creative. ~Do yourself a favor and listen to Liz Phair talk about the reality of being a rockstar. It’s a fresh and open perspective. I am grateful for her lyrics and tenacity.

my review

I like how she talks about her life so much so that you can picture her troubles and I like how she puts sites on the big stars that make it in this industry how at some point you get lost and how some have illnesses and that we are more a like then we care to be believe just that some of us are famous and have money and some of us aren't

An amazing look into an amazing artist!

I don't really know what it is about Liz Phair... but I have always connected with her words and music in a deeply personal way. So, it was great hearing her speak to what motivates and inspires her. I swear I could listen to her read the phone book. The production on the songs was great. I loved hearing her songs in a sparsely produced manner, it made them seem more intimate and accessible. I Loved every minute of it!

Love Liz Phair!

What a great reflection on where she's been and where she sees herself heading. Phair's music has been so important at various stages of my own life and I enjoyed the travels through time with her that this piece provided.
