About this listen

From award-winning author Cathy Gohlke comes a historical fiction story of courage and transformation set in rural Appalachia on the eve of WWII.

When Lilliana Swope’s beloved mother dies, Lilliana gathers her last ounce of courage and flees her abusive husband for the home of her only living relative in the foothills of No Creek, North Carolina. Though Hyacinth Belvidere hasn’t seen Lilliana since she was five, she offers her cherished great-niece a safe harbor. Their joyful reunion inspires plans to revive Aunt Hyacinth’s estate and open a public library where everyone is welcome, no matter the color of their skin.

Slowly Lilliana finds revival and friendship in No Creek - with precocious 11-year-old Celia Percy, with kindhearted Reverend Jesse Willard, and with Ruby Lynne Wishon, a young woman whose secrets could destroy both them and the town. When the plans for the library also incite the wrath of the Klan, the dangers of Lilliana’s past and present threaten to topple her before she’s learned to stand.

With war brewing for the nation and for her newfound community, Lilliana must overcome a hard truth voiced by her young friend Celia: Wishing comes easy. Change don’t.

Hope, grace and mercy

I enjoyed this story because it portrayed challenging family situationsany have and still do experience. The characters lives where believable. The situations where ones that require God's grace and mercy. Hope in God's faithful love to provide the strength needed to continue to fight on during hard times.

Excellent story, narrator is fabulous!

If you’ve ever had a narcissist in your life you’ll recognize the husband.

This is one of those books that talks about God but not in a catholic way. These kinds of books make me very happy.

Long but worth the listen

Story of grace and the redeeming faithfulness of God. Enjoyed listening. At times felt a little drug put but I’m glad I stuck with it.

Help, Healing, Wholeness

The author skillfully leads us into the mental and emotional state of the abused. Those abused physically, emotionally and even spiritually need a refuge when they have the courage to seek help.

Healing only happens when love and truth are given. The various characters created by the author reveals it’s possible to help others heal even if they are not from our social circle.

The main character displays that wholeness is possible, even after abuse, if given safety and time. God’s grace and healing are possible.

Wonderful book

This book can seem sad at first because the main character faces a lot of challenges, but as you go through the story there is much hope revealed. I definitely recommend this book!

Great read!!!

Night bird calling touches on the subject’s of domestic abuse, race, and the KKK. Cathy Gohlke always touches on difficult subjects with the Lords love. She is a gifted author, who I highly recommend.

Get a big box of Kleenex!

VERY GOOD BOOK! Lots of subjects to ponder from yesterday, today and forward. Celia was a mini force to be reckoned with. She was just a child who dealt with adult problems with fierce love and a strong sense of good and bad/right and wrong (thanks to her Momma and Aunt Hyacinth) just like David when he faced Goliath! Plus Marguerite Gavin's narration was truly wonderful. She's a new favorite. Lots of tears were shed reading this both -- good tears.
