Sixteen-year-old Lorena Leland’s dreams of a rich and fulfilling life as a writer are dashed when the stock market crashes in 1929. Seven years into the Great Depression, Rena’s banker father has retreated into the bottle, her sister is married to a lazy charlatan and gambler, and Rena is an unemployed newspaper reporter. Eager for any writing job, Rena accepts a position interviewing former slaves for the Federal Writers’ Project. There, she meets Frankie Washington, a 101-year-old woman whose honest yet tragic past captivates Rena.

As Frankie recounts her life as a slave, Rena is horrified to learn of all the older woman has endured―especially because Rena’s ancestors owned slaves. While Frankie’s story challenges Rena’s preconceptions about slavery, it also connects the two women whose lives are otherwise separated by age, race, and circumstances. But will this bond of respect, admiration, and friendship be broken by a revelation neither woman sees coming?"

best bookin a long time

This is one of the best books I have "read" in a long time. Amazing narration helps, but this is an incredible story. I loved every minute and while it was hard to hear it was alao ao insightful and helped me draw so many lines between the ending of slavery and post avey oppression by design in this country. This is a must read imo

Truth to lead us to our own truth

The stock market crash in 1929 struck world-wide. In Nashville you'll get to know a family that took several hits. Bankers went bankrupt, and investment managers lost the life savings of every client...clients that blamed their own local banker for causing the Great Depression.
This story follows 2 timeliness. One is told from the viewpoint of a you g white woman whose inversor father lost everything of theirs and their peers. The other timeliness is revealed by Frankie, a 101 year old former slave who would forever change many lives
Although it seems unlikely for 2 such people to meet and forge a friendship, readers of this tale will immerse themselves in a story that commands their attention.
