About this listen

ACFW 2024 CAROL AWARD WINNER!!!

Sometimes secrets just won’t stay hidden . . .
Now from USA Today bestselling author and Christy Award Hall of Fame inductee Tamera Alexander comes the story of two women from different centuries living in the same house who share strikingly similar journeys.

Claire Powell’s life is turned upside down when her beloved husband admits to a “near affair.” But when Stephen accepts a partnership with an Atlanta law firm without consulting her and buys a historic Southern home sight-unseen―it pushes their already-fractured marriage to the breaking point. Claire’s world spirals, and she soon finds herself in a marriage she no longer wants, in a house she never asked for.

In 1863, Charlotte Thursmann, pregnant and trapped in a marriage to an abusive husband, struggles to protect her unborn child and the enslaved members of her household. Desperate, she’s determined to right the evils her husband and others like him commit. But how can one woman put an end to such injustice? Especially if her husband makes good on his threat to kill her?

Both Claire and Charlotte discover truths about themselves they never realized, along with secrets long hidden that hold the power to bring God’s restoration―if only they choose to let it.

This Southern historical fiction novel includes:
  • Dual-timeline plot
  • Thought-provoking treatment of the themes of difficult relationships, infidelity, forgiveness, and trust
  • Discussion questions―you’re all set for book club!

A masterpiece

This novel deserves more than 5 stars. I believe it is her most mature work and best yet.

Marriage in trouble

This book does a great job of describing the discord and varied emotions of a troubled relationship. It blends this with a story of the history of an old southern house and how this discovery helps a woman to heal. Great narration

So vivid, I felt I was living the experience myself

Boy, do I wish I had read that book description in its entirety before purchasing and beginning to read! Accustomed to Tamera’s wonderful historical fiction, I expected this to be more of the same. She did a beautiful job with her writing as usual in this book, but the subjects are incredibly difficult for anyone with similar personal experiences. My husband and I both were frustrated and upset by the twists and turns in the main character’s life. Abuse and infidelity is difficult to live through. Fortunately we both count ourselves blessed to be healed from hurts inflicted by others in our pasts. It’s encouraging to see others and how they journeyed through to a better place in their lives, and most importantly, to a closer walk with God. The God of heaven’s armies is truly mighty, forgiving, and altogether wonderful. I pray that if this books hits too close to home for you too, don’t give up… Not in life when faced with such struggles, and not on the book. The latter requires nothing more than determination to read (or hear) it through to the end. The former is made so much easier when you have Christ at the center of your life. Tamera is spot on there. So while I am disappointed the story wasn’t neck deep in the Southern history as expected, this story was well thought out, well written, and encouraging. I look forward to her future work.

Encourages self reflection

I am a huge fan of Tamera Alexander’s work. This story; like so many of her others, drew me in from the beginning with an emotional connection. The Christian lessons interwoven through the story are well done and thought provoking. Loved the duel timeline and the way it was delivered. The narration was perfectly executed.

Very moving read

I just finished listening to/ reading the audio book: “ A Million Little Choices” by Tamera Alexander. It is about a women who lost a child and later her husband was unfaithful… in the middle she gets entwined with the history of a slave and her mistress in their work with the Underground Railroad during the Civil War and how this all led her back to Jesus and eventually healing in her marriage.

This deep stuff- it handled betrayal, struggles with faith in God and trust in her husband, complications with grown children, grief, slavery, gratefulness, temptation… and some intriguing mystery and history in a real and compassionate way. Not simplistic or trite at all.

I was very moved by the story.

This book was so real

I was hooked from the beginning. Laughing one minute and crying in the next, it just felt real, so relatable.. I even thanked my husband for being honorable and trustworthy. He thought I was up to something.
