About this listen

In 1942, Evie Farrow is used to life on Ocracoke Island, where every day is the same—until the German U-boats haunting their waters begin to wreak havoc. And when special agent Sterling Bertrand is washed ashore at Evie's inn, her life is turned upside down. While Sterling's injuries keep him inn-bound for weeks, making him even more anxious about the man he's tracking, he becomes increasingly intrigued by Evie, who seems to be hiding secrets of her own.

Decades earlier, in 1914, Englishman Remington Culbreth arrives at the Ocracoke Inn for the summer, but he doesn't count on falling in love with Louisa Adair, the innkeeper's daughter. When war breaks out in Europe, and their relationship is put in jeopardy, will their love survive?

As Evie and Sterling work to track down an elusive German agent, they unravel mysteries that go back a generation. The ripples from the Great War are still rocking their lives, and it seems yesterday's tides may sweep them all into danger again today.

Bestselling and award-winning author Roseanna M. White whisks you away to two periods fraught with peril in this sweeping and romantic dual-time tale.

Beautiful

The unfolding of this story, with the two timelines, is simply beautiful. I loved seeing some familiar faces, loved the complicity this author always gracefully writes, loved each character. I laughed, I cried. I loved.

Strong characters

The story was excellent, and the narrator should be commended for multiple accents. However, as a southerner, I cringed at much of her accent when speaking as North Carolinians. Some rang true, but most were just too exaggerated especially for the more northern state of the south. The characters were memorable and strongly crafted. There were a couple of missteps in the plotline that seemed preposterous and were pretty hard to believe. But an enjoyable listen reminding us how close the Germans came to U.S. soil in WWII.

Enjoyed this story

I did not like the flip flopping of the years though! That was very distracting as I was constantly looking back. The narrator was good, not great. I will probably reread tis book later.

A lot of jumping back and forth

It was a good story but could be confusing sometimes with all the jumping back and forth. I found that a little tedious.

True Love, Faith and strength!

I really enjoyed this story, especially the way that The Times crossed and came together to build a beautiful legacy through the generations.
It is a story about strong brave women and men That followed their faith. And stay true to their love and family and community In times of war and uncertainty.

Overall a satisfying read, though complicated on audio.

I came to love the various characters, and I always love Roseanna M White’s empowering representation of strong women. That said, for the first half of the book, I found this my least favourite novel from this favourite author of mine. Simply because I had a hard time sorting out all of the characters and relationships, particularly all of the Grans! Halfway through, I was so confused, that I restarted the book. Once I’d unraveled it, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My all time favourite book of hers though, is still The Number of Love. 🥰
