About this listen

Before . . .

Life is idyllic for Julie Porter and her husband Owen. They've bought their dream house in the Berkshires; their careers are on the upswing; and they have the world at their fingertips. They've never been so in love. They've never been happier. The only thing that's missing is a baby—but Julie's got a plan, and they're right on schedule.

Until Owen falls ill with food poisoning, leaving Julie to attend a neighborhood holiday party alone. When she wakes up, half-naked in her neighbor's bathtub, Julie doesn't know how to tell Owen, the police, her friends—anyone—that she has been sexually assaulted. So she keeps it secret until she realizes that she's pregnant with her assailant's baby.

After . . .

Life is unmanageable for Julie. She can't function in the world with a newborn, and she's unable to be present for her husband, her family, her friends. Desperate to solve the mystery of what happened to her, Julie's driven to more and more erratic behavior, until the truth about that night is revealed. Afterward, no one will be the same ever again. Not Owen. Not the baby. And especially not Julie.

Narrator

Very good narrator. Easy listening. Story was lame. Several loose ends that were confounding. Chalk it up to storyline editing flaws.

Strong Start, weak ending

Despite the story, I really enjoy the narriation by Jennifer Pickens. She made me sympathize with Julie's traumatic experience.

Haunting

Stood out among the MANY books I read, in a different way. I quickly checked to see what else the author had available to read next!

So many twist and turns

Such a great book with an explosive ending I didn’t see it coming at all.

Good book

Possible spoiler ahead, read at your own risk.

This was a good book but the shock factor was no shock. If you’ve never watched the movie “Sixth Sense” then this book may surprise you. That movie got me good! I knew that’s where this one was going from the beginning. But the story was still good. I still enjoyed the book. Although it was horribly sad and I wanted to shake some sense into some of the characters at times.

Sad story

Strange and requires a lot of reprocessing of story after the ending. Trigger warnings on this book for sure, it’s just a sad story. Well done but let me in tears.

Unique and engrossing

Wow! When I finished this book all I could think as I wiped the one steady tear that had been trailing down my face was “wow.” This book is the first book in a couple of months that I could not stop listening to. The story is extremely well told, the main character is very well developed and seems real, and the narration is well done. First book in a long time that I can’t stop talking about. Can’t wait for the next Meghan Joyce Tozer book.
