Publisher's summary

Best-selling author Laurie King has won both critical and popular acclaim for her mysteries featuring San Francisco detective Kate Martinelli.

Looking forward to routine police work after her last terrifying case, Kate finds herself on the trail of vigilantes targeting abusive men in the San Francisco area. Kate has just returned to active duty after being injured on the job. Her girl-friend, Lee, has moved back into their home, and their relationship is on the mend. But the calm, predictable life Kate's looking forward to doesn't materialize.

The Ladies of Perpetual Disgruntlement is practicing a modern equivalent of tarring and feathering violent men who seem to have escaped justice. The police department finds their antics humorous until men that fit their profile start turning up dead. As Kate tries to stop the killing, her investigation leads her too close to home for comfort.

A winner of the Edgar Award, Laurie King fills her mysteries with vivid characters and more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. Narrator Alyssa Bresnahan finds the perfect voice for the tough-as-nails detective.

Good Book …

This is also another great book in this series. I like the story and the reader.
THE BIG DISAPPOINTMENT — Because I don’t have the actual book in front of me - I am puzzled as to why the name of Al Hawkins now wife is pronounced differently in this book. We were first introduced to here in book 1 and now in book 4 her name has changed.
That was a huge distraction for me.

Overall very good.

Once again the narrator is suburb in giving voice to the incredible character of Kate. The mystery is solid and holds up throughout the book. Supporting characters are obnoxious and difficult to tolerate. The character of Roz is overbearing and arrogant to the point of annoyance and dread. I spent the entire book wanting Kate to shoot her. A real shame she didn't. Kate's God like worship of Lee set my teeth on edge. I still believe Kate should have walked out on her long ago. But the book is about Kate and the author can't go wrong with that excellence of a character.

Night Work

Good story performance repeated lines in more then one place. Would recommend this to other listeners.

Not the worse edited job but pretty bad

Unfortunately someone was asleep when they edited this book. Lines were repeated, spacing was incorrect, and it was obvious recordings were done at different times. It was distracting.

Excellent series

I'm binge listening to whole series. Wish more than two books still ahead of me in audible library.
Narrator pretty good except that doesn't distinguish enough between male and female characters and between characters in general. And also misses pronunciations of a few words.

Series back on track

Laurie R. King and Alyssa Bresnahan have done it again. This is a good police procedural, but more than an average mystery. I highly recommend this book and series, but suggest you start with book one.

Paid by the word.

Writing could have been tighter. In parts, too precious. The Martinelli character fades at the edges, reaching for it. Missed

Book 4 in the series. Enjoyed it!!!

Women fighting back, violence against women!
This is the fourth book in the Martinelli series and I have read them in order. Slow build to a surprise ending. I truly enjoy the Martinelli series. Kate and her partner are back together and another serial killer is at large. This time her close friends are involved. Alyssa Bresnahan did a good job narrating the book. Look forward to the next in the series.

Great story; poor production

Another great story by Mz King. Love the narrator. However, the quality of the production was less than normal to include many repeated sentences and not enough space between the end of a sentence/paragraph and the next chapter.

violence against women

This is the fourth book in the Martinelli series and I have read them in order. I have enjoyed the other books but this one, I feel, got hung up in the Hindi Gods particularly Kali the female avenger god. The books main theme was about battered women. I feel that King missed a great opportunity to go more in depth on the subject and use the book to educate men and women on the complicated problem. Instead, she went into discussions about the Hindi God Kali and some other female Gods. The characters have almost become people to me and each book feels like I have stopped by for a visit to find out what is going on in their lives. I did relate to Roz and her problems sitting down to work on her doctorial dissertation. As with the other books in the series the book had some action, suspense and humor. King is an excellent descriptive writer and I enjoy her books overall. Alyssa Bresnahan did a good job narrating the book. Look forward to the next in the series.
