About this listen

Thirty-five years have passed since the sudden end of the Gilbaglian War. Destota Valentine and his elite 200 are no longer needed in the new Human Empire. Even as his wife Mallory takes the reigns as leader of human space, Destota and his troops are mothballed and begin to suffer damaging effects of the genetic modifications inflicted on them. Desperate for another mission, Destota and seven of the original Nightstalkers strike out to the destroyed ruins of Vandor to investigate a strange anomaly in the gravity fields. What they find is a horror beyond human comprehension that will drive humanity to the brink of extinction.

Great dialogue, story jumped around a lot

The writer and narator did a great job with the witty banter and smart quips. For veteran readers/listeners of the series (this was my first adventure in this universe) there are a lot of catch-up's or re-cap's of previous adventures, this may be a positive for some. The real reason this didn't get full marks is that I found it hard to follow the full story ark. This could have been down to my listening times or routine and if consumed in larger chunks this might not be an issue. I also really enjoyed the multiple references to other classics in the genre.
Fans of the series will enjoy this installment if you haven't visited this universe in some time. Worth a credit if you are going to listen in longer chunks.

3rd book in aSci-fi series

First off, I have not read the other books
In the series which maybe detrimental to my appreciation of the story. I had a hard time getting through the first half. It did pick up quickly from there and held my interest for the remainder hence the 4 stars. Narrator did a great job with delivering the medium. The concept of the characters, strengths, aliens visualization was all done quite well. I did find some of the flashback portions to be a bit confusing. Get the other ones first as I feel
I would have better appreciated the tale
If I had. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

Each Books Storytelling Gets Better

4.75 out of 5 stars

The thing that jumped out to me in Nightstalkers was Spires storytelling. I think that each book has gotten stronger and it was a bit hard to jump from book two back to book one in terms of the way that he tells stories. But in Nightstalkers Spires takes a pretty big leap. He was able to explain in greater detail some of the backstories and a lot of what makes each character tick.

Another thing that was obvious in this one was the Spires is either a military man or knows a lot of them because a lot of the things that were covered in this one – especially during the “down” time are stories that I’ve heard from Veterans. He talks a lot about PTSD and similar issues that soldiers have once they don’t have a job to do anymore. It wasn’t overdone or even thrown in your face – but I can tell that he either has personal experience with this or knows people that do.

Overall, I thought that Nightstalkers was Spires’s strongest book yet and of course, the narration by Brown once again makes this story fly by. He’s able to bring the passion and the emotion that came with some of these scenes and make them believable.

Not a stand alone story

I somehow missed this was the third book in a series. While it was enjoyable, with a wonderful performance, I was quite lost, having missed the first 2 books. It was a good story but with lots of missing pieces, that would probably have been even better if I'd consumed the first two books as well.

I received a copy of this book at my request in exchange for a fair review.

More twists. More badassery. What's not to love?

If you're already looking at acquiring Book 3 of this scintillating series, then I probably don't have to sell you on it, or tell you that, (not real) spoiler alert, Destota Valentine kicks some serious ass in this newest iteration of Jeremy Spire's Ashes of Eternity thrill ride. Come for the brutal hand-to-hand, and even hand-to-tank, combat, and stay for the touching and heart-wrenching struggles of a born-and-bred soldier, which Spires serves up with impressive and eye-moistening realism, brought to gut-wrenching life by the talented Garrett Michael Brown.

Awesome

An absolutely fun and irreverent ride from start to finish. It carries on the adventure amazingly well and doesn't get itself bogged down or make you need to take a break. Just a truly fun entry and overall great series.

epic comeback

Destota Valentine is many things, a bench player is not one of them.

Meet the Valentine children, there names are confusing, but you'll get the hang of it; they are just like their parents, brave, audacious and willing to kill everything in their path to achieve victory.

Here is where the rubber meets the road and the invincible are shown to have vulnerabilities. Humanity charges forward taking on the whispers in the dark and gaining a new ally against the ever mounting list of enemies.

Read it, listen to it, either way Spires and Brown have combined to be an unstoppable force in the realm of military science fiction.
