Publisher's summary

“What does Nihilism mean?” wrote Friedrich Nietszche. “That the highest values are losing their value. There is no goal.... There is no truth, no ‘thing in itself.’ There is no answer to the question: ‘why?’”

In 1962, the young Eugene Rose - the future Hieromonk Seraphim - undertook to write a monumental chronicle of the abandonment of truth in the modern age. Of the hundreds of pages of materials he compiled for this work, only the present essay, on nihilism, has come down to us in completed form. Here Eugene reveals the core of all modern thought and life - the belief that all truth is relative - and shows how this belief has been translated into action in our era. Today, more than half a century after he wrote it, this essay is more timely than ever. It clearly explains why contemporary ideas, values, and attitudes - the “spirit of the age” - are shifting so rapidly in the direction of moral anarchy, as the philosophy of nihilism enters more deeply into the fiber of society. Nietszche was right when he predicted that the 20th century would usher in “the triumph of Nihilism”.

As the post-modern world of the 21st century has continued to sink ever further into relativism, this classic essay has continued to grow in popularity among those thirsting to understand the causes of the catastrophe that is rapidly overtaking Western societies.

Reads very current

Fr Seraphim wrote over 60 years ago and refers to Bolshevism and Naziism but take away those monikers and he is describing current events, the seeds of which were laid in that time. A cautionary tale that all would do well to heed.

Eye opening.

If you are a Christian this is a must listen to understand the cultural soup you swim in everyday. This will open your eyes and help you order your life in a way to overcome adversity and complacency.

A tremendous communicator not seen in recent time

In the tradition of Chesterton, lewis and abraham Kuyper, Fr.Rose communicates in terms of first principles...A excellent angle of seeing the dynamic s of the poisonous atmosphere of our times....
I only wished he addressed the deepest nihilism of the pantheism found in all new age spirituality in the chapter VITALISM...Here chesterton identifies this truly damaging thing...I found the chapter THE DESTROYERS chilling.,,,,, "the great reset "?..!!!We are in real trouble...
.That said, this is a essential work worthy of one's study
...p.s.
ALSO WONDERFULLY NARRATED..LOL..

Great!

First book I’ve read by Fr. Seraphim. Great introduction! The style of this book kind of reminds me of Chesterton.

Interesting but dense

The book is very good. As we should expect, the author blends religion and philosophy, but in a well balanced way. The topic already requires full attention, but this book is very dense and not for beginners. If your mind goes away for a second, trying to remember if you turned off the oven or something, you’ll be lost and have to rewind a lot to recatch. Still, an interesting listening, but be sure you’ll be fully dedicated to the it.

Clarity and Genius

The breadth of Seraphim Rose’s reading and the clarity of his understanding of Nihilism is amazing.
A joy to read. Easily comprehensible and incredibly useful in understanding the current reality of our world.
