About this listen

A dedicated group of Orthodox monks (who wish to remain anonymous) have created a fresh English translation of the Masoretic Hebrew text of the Psalter, corrected to the Septuagint. A frequently asked question: The Psalms aren't in numerical order in this Psalter. Why is that? Answer: That was done intentionally. This edition of the Psalter was created for prayer, at home or in church, rather than for reference. It's not just another Book of Psalms. That means the Psalms are organized according to the established cycle of daily readings for Orthodox Christian monastic practice. We follow the same order in our churches and our homes. If you'd like more information for reference purposes, we recommend the Book of Psalms (and its accompanying notes) in the Orthodox Study Bible.

Daily Inspiration

I use this recorded Psalter daily as a part of my morning prayer and meditation. The work helps me to
focus on the Psalm being read.
The recordings are a daily inspiration to me.

Praying Biblical Prayers

It is wonderful to listen to and pray the psalms daily. Taking time each morning and evening provides good structure, discipline, and focus to ones prayer time. Pray the prayers that the Holy Spirit breathed into the Scriptures!!

Great for daily prayers

I like how the audio is recorded in a somewhat lively room, I believe it's in a church.

I did listened to one chapter a night before sleep, and prayed about the things in the Psalm.

Since what is being read and chanted is a custom translation, I wish I could follow the text if the translation as I listened to Fr. John. But I used an ESV translation and it was like 85% similar.

Great introduction to the Psalter for those exploring Orthodoxy, like me.

Difficult to Navigate

i wish the chapters of the recordings were aligned with the numbering of the Psalms. I really like this translation, but the Audible book is difficult to use with the Kindle version of the book.

Psalter the way it's meant to be digested.

Psalter's meant to be read out loud and heard, not printed and read. So thank you Monks of the Orthodox Church and Fr. John Oliver. I find much strength having now the access to listen to the psalter while commuting on an over crowded Tokyo train to work. An honest presentation of the psalter beats one thousand "upbeat, don't lose hope yet" type of protestant publications. Glory to God.

Best way to unwind

"Orthodox prayer in Psalms is like the ox in the field–– slow, patient, undramatic work –– and the field bears fruit. Psalm-prayer is the ox-work; the field that flourishes is our life." –– Donald Sheehan
