Publisher's summary

Tiring of the company of junkies and burnouts, Thomas Skelton goes home to Key West to take up a more wholesome life. But things fester in America's utter South. And Skelton's plans to become a skiff guide in the shining blue subtropical waters place him on a collision course with Nichol Dance, who has risen to the crest of the profession by dint of infallible instincts and a reputation for homicide. Out of their deadly rivalry, Thomas McGuane has constructed a novel with the impetus of a thriller and the heartbroken humor that is his distinct contribution to American prose.

Couldn’t finish it ….

I read a lot of McGuane’s ‘s stuff 25 years ago… Found him to be a very talented writer. Decided to try his more recent works… Sorry, but this crap is worthless.

Give in to the words. It will be worthwhile

First, for my money, this narrator was perfect for this book and was a delight to listen to. Second, I agree that it’s easy to get lost when it comes to following the “plot” and all the characters and at first that bothered me. But the more I read the more I found myself giving in to simply enjoying McGuine’s imagination and his writing chops. Sit back and enjoy the ride would be my advice.

couldn't follow it most of the time

I can't blame the reader for his efforts, though a little slower might have helped, and some of the voices were difficult to distinguish. But overall, the story was crap. I couldn't tell who was talking half the time, what part of the story I was in, or even if it was reality or thoughts. don't get me wrong, there was some great literature in there, but that's about it.
