Publisher's summary

In this gripping novel about obsession, control, and self-preservation, a woman desperate to provide a new life for her sister enters a compromising arrangement with an entitled tech billionaire.

Rosemary Rabourne is already struggling to pay the bills when her recently orphaned half sister, Wendy, shows up at her door. Rosemary will try anything to provide for the traumatized teenager—including offering her services as a high-end escort.

Leo Glass is the billionaire CEO of a revolutionary social app. He wants the “girlfriend experience”—someone contractually obligated to love him—and he thinks he’s found the perfect match in Rosemary. His proposition has its perks: a luxury apartment and financial security. And its conditions: constant surveillance and availability whenever Leo calls. It’s not the life Rosemary wants, but she’s out of options.

Then she meets her new neighbor, Sam, a musician with whom Rosemary shares an immediate attraction and a genuine intimacy she’s never felt with anyone. Falling in love makes it possible to imagine a real new life. But Leo won’t let go of her that easily, and his need for control escalates. So does Rosemary’s desperation—to protect Wendy, to protect herself, and, at any price, to escape.

Critic reviews

“Hicks draws listeners in with her portrayal of the guilt and trauma driving Rosemary’s frantic search to help her sister.… As time passes, Leo becomes more controlling, leading to a dramatic and fatal confrontation. Hicks captivates by fully realizing the complexity of Rosemary’s inner emotions as well as Leo’s slowly intensifying obsession.”Booklist

Surprise ending

I enjoyed this book. It starts off a bit slow but I decided to keep listening. Eventually I was hooked and had to finish! Rosemary is a character you’ll either love or hate. The ending was a bit surprising to me and I think it suits the story well. Can’t wait for more book from this author!

I love the writing the narration of this book, as well as the deep meaning behind the story.

Not worth my credit

Over 1500 audios in my Library and most of them I either like or don't. This book I hated, the story line was weird and went against any sane person's reasoning. Rosemary is simply an opportunist who refused to abide the contract she knew about going in,.

Good story but can be triggering for some

The reader was good, and the story flowed, but a weak female role can be hard to get through.

Hard to Finish

Couldn’t really get into this book. I thought the main character was annoying and naive. The same situations over and over.

Couldn't get into it

I'm struggling to finish this one. It's boring and predictable. I've moved on to another book, not sure if I'll come back to this one.

Good but not uplifting story

This is definitely not a feel-good book if that is what a reader is looking for. This book is hard emotionally and violent at times in the way a man can abuse a woman. It does not have to be sexual out of the book partially involves that; it is about abuse in its many forms.

Just ok

I couldn’t decide if this was science fiction or a mystery! Minimal character development for Leo. Not a very believable story. The performance was good.

Tech/Romance

What a great tech/romance. I couldn’t stop listening. Please even with the happy ending as equal.
