About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Linwood Barclay delivers an electrifying novel of suspense, in which a family’s troubled past is about to return in more ways than one. And this time, they may not be able to escape.… Seven years ago, Terry Archer and his family, who first appeared in No Time for Goodbye, experienced a horrific ordeal that nearly cost them their lives. Today, the echoes of that fateful night are still audible. Terry’s wife, Cynthia, is living separate from her husband and daughter after her own personal demons threatened to ruin her relationship with them permanently. Their daughter, Grace, is rebelling against her parents’ seemingly needless overprotection.

Terry is just trying to keep his family together. And the entire town is reeling from the senseless murder of two elderly locals. But when Grace foolishly follows her delinquent boyfriend into a strange house, the Archers must do more than stay together. They must stay alive. They have all been unwillingly drawn into the shadowy depths of their seemingly idyllic hometown. For there, they will be reconnected with the man who saved their lives seven years ago, but who still remains a ruthless, unrepentant criminal. They will encounter killers for hire working all sides. And they will learn that there are some things people value much more than money, and will do anything to get it.

Caught in a labyrinth between family loyalty and ultimate betrayal, Terry must find a way to extricate his family from a lethal situation he still doesn’t fully comprehend. All he knows is that to live, he may have to do the unthinkable.

Not Barclays best

I have enjoyed most of Barclay’s books but this one was so-so at best. Reader was great either. I would skip this one

Can People Really Live With Lies and Deception?

This is the second in Barclay's books about the Archer family and their amazing "troubles." The narration is very engaging and the story is filled with twists and turns along the way. This one, like "Too Close to Home," left me shaking my head.

The two books allow you to know the main characters and even the bad guy gets your sympathy at times. In the end, the Archers involve themselves (even at arms length) in heinous crimes and are raising a teenage daughter who is more than a little bit aware of all of it. How do they resolve their involvement, their cover up, their intentional misleading of the police, etc., in order to protect themselves from any accountability? Mr. Archer is a teacher. Mrs. Archer a government employee. Yet, they seem okay with the events and the deception that must continue if they are to remain above suspicion.

Not to give away the ending, but in this one, the real "culprit" behind much of the crime in the story is known only at the very close of the book. . . and that person has no regrets, no qualms and no accountability at all. Breaks your heart because over the two books, this one will have your empathy!

A very good read! Recommend reading both books, with this one second!

Watch the help

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It was a wild follow up with the characters from "No time to say goodbye"

Would you recommend No Safe House to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, would have to read the first book of series.

Did Brian O'Neill and Graham Winton do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Was not a fan.

Do you think No Safe House needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

A good follow-up with Jane and Grace?

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed both books.

Extraordinary author and narrators

Both narrators are excellent. Taking us on a wild ride, this suspenseful murder thriller goes from chapter to chapter with different characters (a favorite writing style of mine). However, toward the ending, it started to get rather silly and far-fetched. Still worth the credit. I’ve had the pleasure of listening to several of Barclay’s audiobooks and look forward to another. Thank you, Audible!

Linwood Barclay - Another Great Read!!!

Once again Linwood Barclay has given us a truly great mystery with relatable characters, and a story line that will keep you guessing up to the end! No Time for Goodbye is Part 1, No Safe House Part 2, both stories are independent so you don’t have to read them in succession but why wouldn’t you they are SO good!

Not his best work

Once I discovered Linwood Barclay, i sought out all of his works. Like Stephen King’s works, back in the day, I was eager for all of his novels. It turns out that by chance I listened to this audiobook for the second time. The narrator was great but the story lacked the author’s twists and turns.
I wanted to pummel the teenage girl for being such a brat. Her mother was also a fragile creature that annoyed me. I applaud her dad who did everything he could to protect her youthful vision. Resulted in a major distraction.
This is one you can skip.
