In 1820, a young farm boy in search of truth has a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ. Three years later, an angel guides him to an ancient record buried in a hill near his home. With God’s help, he translates the record and organizes the Savior’s church in the latter days. Soon others join him, accepting the invitation to become Saints through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Story
This book contains stories told from the point of view of those who experienced the revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants, giving us insight into their meaning. While the section headings provide context for the revelations, they don't tell the complete story. What questions prompted the revelations? What did the Lord's responses mean to those He addressed? How did they respond? Perfect for study with the Doctrine and Covenants.

Founder of the largest indigenous Christian church in American history, Joseph Smith published the 584-page Book of Mormon when he was 23 and went on to organize a church, found cities, and attract thousands of followers before his violent death at age 38. Richard Bushman, an esteemed cultural historian and a practicing Mormon, moves beyond the popular stereotype of Smith as a colorful fraud to explore his personality, his relationships with others, and how he received revelations.

Families are splintering around us, our children are becoming alienated from their great cultural heritage, and our leaders seem increasingly out of touch. Yet, according to Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one cannot lose hope.

Story
As president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and Utah’s first territorial governor, Brigham Young (1801-77) shaped a religion, a migration, and the American West. He led the Saints to Utah, guided the establishment of 350 settlements, and inspired the Mormons as they weathered unimaginable trials and hardships. In this new biography, historian Thomas G. Alexander draws on a lifetime of research to provide an evenhanded view of Young and his leadership.

Great primer for a new convert
I ❤️❤️❤️ this story. I'm a recent convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (6/29/19). Listening to No Unhallowed Hand (after Vol. 1The Standard of Truth) was so helpful for connecting all the stories of the early church together in one well written, beautifully narrated book. Join the fold of God's church here on the earth and then listen to both these volumes.

Fascinating and sad
The themes are missionary work and polygamy. The missionary success seems remarkable considering all the problems faced by members. Polygamy would have served a purpose and certainly has biblical precedent but became a huge problem as the US government heaped increasing sanctions against its participants. Ironically, a man can now marry another man. The book well portrays the array of personal pains resulting from the abrupt end to polygamy.

Narrator ruins the rest
The history is very well written and very interesting. The quotes selected are great—-except for the horrible fakey “accents” the narrator used to read them. The narration made me grit my teeth through the entire book. Just finished it, and heaved a great sigh of relief. I hope to goodness that a different narrator is used for the next volume.

Narration was pretty bad.
Stories were great, book was informative, narration was bad. Really bad. The voices and accents were irritating, especially those of the women, and every quote was spoken as if it were the most profound thing the person had ever said. Very heavy handed. My husband refused to be in the room when I was listening. I hope the church will choose a different reader for upcoming volumes.

Truth of our History
Hearing church history from the journals of early Saints was fascinating to me. Even though I’ve been a member of the church my whole life, I have never understood polygamy. It was eye opening (in a good way) to hear the experiences of the women who entered into those relationships. Kirby Heybourne was an excellent narrator.
