Publisher's summary
"Robinson is an author with amazing empathy, a snare-trap ear for dialogue, and a clear eye for the telling detail." (Michael Connelly)
One of the world's greatest suspense writers returns with the 27th novel featuring the legendary Detective Alan Banks in the mystery series Stephen King calls "the best now on the market".
When property developer Connor Clive Blaydon is found dead, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks and his Yorkshire team dive into the investigation. As luck would have it, someone had installed a cache of spy-cams all around his luxurious home. The team hope that they’ll find answers - and the culprit - among the video recordings.
Instead of discovering Connor's murderer, however, the grainy and blurred footage reveals another crime: a brutal rape. If they can discover the woman’s identity, it could lead to more than justice for the victim; it could change everything the police think they know about Connor and why anyone would want him dead.
Meanwhile, tensions are rising between Banks and his friend, Zelda. A super recognizer - able to recognize faces significantly better than most people - Zelda is determined to bring the men who abused her to justice. But stirring up the murky waters of the past will put her in far greater danger than ever before, and Banks worries that he won’t be able to stop her from plunging too deep before it’s too late.

Story
Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire seeking some small measure of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors---among them a brazen Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

The girl was placed in the witness protection program, and the case went cold, but years later, Grens is still haunted by the seemingly random slaying and the little girl who was spared. So when he learns that the apartment where the crime occurred is now the scene of a mysterious break-in, Grens immediately fears that someone is intent on silencing the only witness.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Story
It's Christmas in Oxford, and firefighters have pulled two children from the smoking ruin of their home. The mystery deepens when it becomes clear that the parents are nowhere to be found. Why were the children left in the house alone? Why is neither parent answering their phone? Were they kidnapped? Murdered? From the start, DI Fawley—still reeling from his own personal tragedy—knows that this house fire is the scene of a crime, not an accident.

Whew!
I think abridged would have been more enjoyable. The most exciting parts came after a bit too much extraneous “color” or detail. A good mystery, very exciting , with plenty of surprises. Some of the dialog could be used in real police questioning!

A really great plot
This was my favorite Banks novel of the 3 I’ve read so far ( kinda started at #28 because it was on sale, then read 26 then this one, 27). I actually teared up at the end more than once. Characters are nicely fleshed out, and though I could predict a couple of the plot twists, my suspension of disbelief was on at level 10 and I didn’t care! I wish there were more new ones from 28 on, but I’ll go back and do some of the others in the 20’s. Well read; nuanced, with good timbre and accent variety depending on chacracter.

Vance’s characters were easier to tell apart and sounded closer to their age. The missing barrage of music credits made this story much more enjoyable also.
