About this listen
The number one international best-selling thriller that tells the electrifying story of a police inspector and a former criminal informant in a race against time as they attempt to unravel past and present secrets.
He thought she was safe. Then the past came knocking.
Seventeen years ago, Criminal Inspector Ewert Grens was called to the scene of a brutal crime. A family had been murdered, and the only survivor - and witness - was the five-year-old daughter. The girl was placed in the witness protection program, and the case went cold, but years later, Grens is still haunted by the seemingly random slaying and the little girl who was spared. So when he learns that the apartment where the crime occurred is now the scene of a mysterious break-in, Grens immediately fears that someone is intent on silencing the only witness. He races to find her...before they do.
Meanwhile, someone in the city's criminal underworld is executing weapons smugglers and has placed former police informant Piet Hoffman's family in grave danger. He must unravel the secret threat to his family, all while keeping secrets of his own. Soon his hunt for answers intertwines with Ewert's, and the two men find themselves in the middle of a criminal conspiracy that is more complicated - and dangerous - than they could have imagined.

She’s no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation. Critic reviews
"If you thrill to the chills of Scandinavian noir, chances are you've read something by Anders Roslund...Roslund has two strong prose styles - dark and darker - and both are on show in this no-frills translation by Elizabeth Clark.” (New York Times Book Review)
“[H]eart-pounding.... This terrific mash-up of police procedural and crime thriller has strongly imagined characters, explosive action, and a twisty plot with an unexpected conclusion. It’s a must for Scandinavian noir fans.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"Grens is an immensely compelling character whose sharp intuition and dedication to justice are reminiscent of Harry Bosch. This tense, sophisticated procedural can stand alone, but readers will find themselves drawn to Grens’ seven earlier investigations." (Booklist, starred review)

Story
Bernt Lund harbors a sickness. He is a monster, an unrepentant child molester and serial killer. In the mind of society, in the minds of his nine-year-old victims' parents, and in the minds of his fellow inmates, he is a waking nightmare. And now he has escaped from custody - the worst scenario imaginable for Aspsås Prison's Department for Sexual Crimes. Detective Superintendent Ewert Grens is about to encounter the most profoundly appalling case in his career and perhaps in Stockholm's history.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Story
Just two years ago, the media turned Detective John Spader into a hero. He'd caught a twisted serial killer terrorizing Massachusetts, and the "Jack of Spades," as the media dubbed Spader, was born. But when the murderer walked free on a technicality - free to kill again - the public turned on Spader. Now a new serial killer is on the loose. He wears the silly, gap-toothed, grinning mask of Galaxo, Starboy Avenger! - a cartoon alien of unparalleled popularity with children.

So many subplots, confusing
I really wanted to like this book but it just got too confusing which is probably due to keeping the original names after the translation. I wanted to read a book about a girl who lost her family and that part was interesting. However, it was so minor that I kept forgetting that it was why I originally got the book, Narration was great and a soothing voice but I kept falling asleep when not understanding what was going on in the book.

Far fetched
I really tried to like this book, but half way through it was just tedious to follow. The plot got to caught up on stuff that didn’t matter.

Started out pretty good
By midway the wheels started falling off for me. The trust issues became ridiculous and the Rambo stuff became too much. If the main villains identity wasn’t so obvious, so early I would have been more keen on finishing.

Good book but not without issues.
This is a good book but did come with some issues. They're recording never failed to skip at the beginning of every chapter. The story is very compelling but clunky, but this might have been the translation. Simon Vance is excellent as always. Overall it's a good read but I think I would have enjoyed it better as a reed, rather than a listen.

Tiresome
Just dragged on a bit too long. The lead detective is not very bright, talks too much and can't seem to solve any serious problems. The book began really great but went down hill quickly. Just got too tiresome. It's something to fill your time when you can't find anything else to listen to.
