About this listen
Not Your Mother's Goose proves that fairy tales and nursery rhymes aren't just for kids anymore. Envision it as the Cliffs Notes of children's stories - if Cliffs Notes was overtaken by Dave Barry or the folks at The Onion. Not Your Mother's Goose is a series of totally irreverent, mega-sarcastic fairy-tale recaps, along with a host of hilarious fake news stories and headlines ranging from Rapunzel getting a bikini wax to Old McDonald bombing on Wheel of Fortune after only buying vowels. The net result is a madcap trip that will leave you laughing all the way from Rumpelstiltskin's Twitter feed to Humpty Dumpty's Facebook page (where Jack is still trying to grow a beanstalk - in FarmVille).

Story
Critics have called her “sweet, adorable, and vicious.” But there is so much more to be said about Samantha Bee. For one, she’s Canadian - whatever that means. And now, she opens up for the very first time about her checkered Canadian past. With charming candor, she admits to her Lennie from Of Mice and Men-style love of baby animals, her teenage crime spree as one-half of a car-thieving couple, and the fact that strangers seem compelled to show her their genitals.

Internationally best-selling novelist and American icon Tom Robbins delivers the long-awaited tale of his wild life and times, both at home and around the globe. The grandchild of Baptist preachers, Robbins would become over the course of half a century a poet-interruptus, an air force weatherman, a radio DJ, an art-critic-turned-psychedelic-journeyman, a world-famous novelist, and a counter-culture hero, leading a life as unlikely, magical, and bizarre as those of his quixotic characters.

Story
You have to use what you got to get what you want. For Journey Clayton, this statement rings more than true as she struggles under the weight of her mother’s cocaine addiction. She learns from a very young age that family doesn’t offer as much help as she hoped they would. It’s not until she befriends Khalid, the son of a neighborhood drug dealer, who is trying to stay above the struggle himself, that she starts to believe there might just be hope...even for little girls in the ghetto.

Story
Narrated by Mike Vendetti, this is the original version of Hensel and Gretel published by the Brothers Grimm. Probably not suitable for the polite and sensitive child under 12. A really wicked stepmother convinces the children's father to lead the children out into the woods far enough so they wouldn't be able to return home, but they do return one time to the chagrin of the stepmother. The next time they are taken to the woods they are not able to return home but do stumble upon a little house constructed of cake and confectionery which they immediately begin to consume.

If you think Joan Rivers said funny, outrageous, and ridiculous things onstage, wait 'til you hear the funny, outrageous, and ridiculous things she said offstage...things that will make you laugh out loud...and keep Melissa in therapy for the foreseeable future. The only thing my mother loved more than making people laugh was lying...or as she'd say, "embellishing." Her motto was: "Why let the truth ruin a good story?" This book contains some of those stories.

Story
Librarians spend their lives weeding - not weeds, but books - books that have reached the end of their shelf life both literally and figuratively. They remove books that patrons no longer check out, and they put back books they treasure. Annie Spence, who has a decade of experience as a Midwestern librarian, does this not only at her Michigan library but also at home, for her neighbors, at cocktail parties - everywhere. In Dear Fahrenheit 451, she addresses those books directly.

Emily the Strange: 13 years old. Able to leap tall buildings, probably, if she felt like it. More likely to be napping with her four black cats; or cobbling together a particle accelerator out of lint, lentils, and safety pins; or rocking out on drums/ guitar/ saxophone/ zither; or painting a swirling feral sewer mural; or forcing someone to say "swirling feral sewer mural" 13 times fast.... and pointing and laughing.

Harrison Scott Key was born in Memphis, but he grew up in Mississippi, among pious, Bible-reading women and men who either shot things or got women pregnant. At the center of his world was his larger-than-life father - a hunter, a fighter, and a football coach. Harrison, with his love of books and excessive interest in hugging, couldn't have been less like Pop, and when it became clear that he was not able to kill anything very well or otherwise make his father happy, he resolved to become everything his father was not.

A snapshot might show a happy young family, but only a dummkopf would buy that. Nine-year-old Gloria is gutsy and wisecracking. Her father, Jimmy, all dazzle and danger, is often on the far side of the law and makes his own rules - which everyone else better follow. Fun fairy tale re-telling for adults
Short and fun, this is a clever compilation of fairy tales and nursery rhymes re-told with a modern twist. The author gives interpretive summaries of a multitude of fairy tales and folk tales, including "Rumplestiltskin", "Sleeping Beauty", "Snow White", "Hansel and Gretel", and "The Tortoise and the Hare", just to name a few, infusing sarcasm and wit into each. He also includes headlines from supposed newspaper articles and occasionally the article as well. These headlines were some of my favorite parts of the book. Narrator Eric Martin was spot on with the sarcasm and attitude. A word of warning though-- you will likely laugh out loud while reading (or listening) to this book so make sure you are somewhere you don't have to hold back. I had to try and hold in my laughs more than once, better to just let them out.
Be aware that the intended audience is definitely adult and older teens. This is NOT for young children. If you don't mind sexual innuendos and non-politically correct comments and you have a somewhat twisted sense of humor (like me), you will probably enjoy this.

Funny, Inappropriate and Entertainig
What did you love best about Not Your Mother's Goose?
This is a spoof of the Mother Goose rhymes and Fairy Tales. It is written in the same vein as "Politically Incorrect Bedtime Stories." The spoofs are creative and delightfully irreverent. The narrator's voice is perfect for the role. He gives a good performance with nice delivery. This is a fun book.
What did you like best about this story?
The wacky and creative ideas are great. Repunzel goes to a spa to get a bikini wax. Locks of Love is unsure how to respond to her donation. Yep, that's a dilemma. How about when the Big Bad Wolf eats Dr. Phil to fulfill the dying wish of little Timmy from Make-A-Wish Foundation. With stories like this, you can not go wrong.
Which character – as performed by Eric Martin – was your favorite?
There are not characters per se in this book. Just awesome short little spoofs of fairy tales.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
You certainly could listen to it all in one setting. I like listening to it in half hour chunks on my commute. It was a great way to end the day.
Any additional comments?
This is definitely for adults. It contains adult language and themes. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

SNL meets Mother Goose
What did you love best about Not Your Mother's Goose?
Great wit. This is definitely not for children or younger teens.
What does Eric Martin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I thought Mr. Martin did a wonderful job with this piece. He truly owned the text. It was fun, snarky, satirical, witty. At times I felt like Rod Serling was narrating. Fun. Great job.

Silly Willie meets Sarcastic Sally
Where does Not Your Mother's Goose rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This was a fun silly listen and I'm not sure how I would rank it among the other books because it is totally different - apples to oranges comparison.
What did you like best about this story?
This is a collection of 'bits" which would allow for interspersed listening but I zipped right through this book. Several places in the stories caused me to chuckle out loud which brought a few looks since I was listening with headphones in a quite environment. Oh well.
Have you listened to any of Eric Martin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to Eric Martin but I am going to have to hunt for more stuff from him. He was great for this material. Kudos to Mr. Martin! I want to listen to the book again just to listen to his delivery of the material!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
An Updated Farce!

Yes, it's a funny, light read/listen that's also entertaining.
What other book might you compare Not Your Mother's Goose to and why?

This is the first book I've listened to that was narrated by Eric Martin
Who was the most memorable character of Not Your Mother's Goose and why?
Prince Charming, because he was 'dating' a lot of ladies
