About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Not the Ones Dead by Dana Stabenow, read by Marguerite Gavin.

The gripping new Kate Shugak novel by New York Times bestselling author Dana Stabenow. What seems a tragic accident soon becomes a murder investigation as Kate is drawn into a case of political intrigue.

A mid-air collision in the Alaskan wilderness between two small aircraft leaves ten people dead. Was it a bird strike, pilot error... or premeditated murder?

Then an eleventh body is found in the wreckage: a man shot gangland style, twice in the chest and once in the head.

In an investigation that reaches to the highest levels of government, justice may not be served, but Kate Shugak is determined that the truth will out, even at the risk of her life and the lives of those she loves most.

Love Kate, family & Park Rats

The old Kate returns! A bit political, although fiction, the story runs true! Looking forward to the next adventure!

Timely Issues addressed

Scary far right, far left not much better. Let's hear it for those of us hanging out somewhere in the middle.

Slow Story and Sad Narration

I’m asking if Dana Stabenow wrote this book. Somehow it’s lost its charm. The story is slow to start and finally improves around chapter 6. Also she’s resurrected characters from the dead. The biggest disappointment is the narrator. I had difficulty identifying the characters as she has degraded to “reading” the story versus prior “performances”. I guess my expectations are too high.

Excellent story and narrator

Dana Stabenow never disappoints and I can’t imagine a better narrator. Current, timely and sharp.

Love Kate's world and characters.

So appreciate the journey into Kate's world and appreciate another great story. I do wonder about the editing, as this book mentions Bernie's wife Enid as if she were still alive when she was murdered in a previous book. Then it is mentioned that there is a kitchen and food served at the Roadhouse when it is specifically mentioned in previous books that no food is served at Bernies.

Does Not Disapoint

Dana Stabenow & Kate Shugak still got it! The best Margarite Gavin's sounded. I really enjoyed the mystery and seeing where the cast of characters are now. We do get to see more of Kate's political views. But let's face it, we're in a tumultuous time, the climate is bound to effect authors' works.

Thought provoking

This was a good read. Terror and newbie terrorists. Food for thought and good basis for discussion.

Another solid entry in the series

After the atrocious "Bad Blood," and the rather annoying "Less Than a Treason" and the better "No Fixed Line" so glad the series back on track.

A group of Christian white nationalists has moved to the park, taking over a luxurious mountaintop hunting lodge. The newcomers don't mix well with the park rats. First a truckload of them run Bobby off the road but take a powder when they see his gun. Then a couple taking their annual anniversary hike tell Dan they were ordered off a trail by gun-toting newcomers. There's a row at Bernie's bar when a group of the newcomers (identifiable by their clothing & insignia patches) suggest a waitress stick to "her own kind." The trouble-makers are ejected but not before one tries to pull a gun, desisting only because of a boom from Bernie's pump action double-barrel. The bar subsequently burns to the ground.

Too many things are going wrong since the newcomers came. There's a plane crash with all aboard lost. The pilot was a senior but a good pilot who had all his faculties, tho the crash is blamed on pilot error due to his age. Funny thing is there's an extra body at the crash site.

Ranger Dan thinks his status will keep him safe when he tries a flyover of the area that changed hands but learns otherwise when someone shoots at his plane from the ground and damages it with a drone...

Great story, great narrator!

I think this is one of the best of the Kate Shugak series (though I really love this series - I’ve read every one).

Always love Kate!

Several little stories interwoven into
the big plot. Appropriate story for these days. Hope Dana keeps them coming.
