About this listen

Fan-favorite heroes Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces on a deadly maritime case in the remarkable new novel from number-one New York Times best-selling author John Sandford.

An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

They're federal officers killed on the job, which means the case is the FBI's turf. When the FBI's investigation stalls out, they call in Lucas Davenport. And when his case turns lethal, Davenport will need to bring in every asset he can claim, including a detective with a fundamentally criminal mind: Virgil Flowers.

Excellent narration

Hello!? The reviewer who gave Richard Ferrone a thumbs down on this book is obviously behind the eight ball. Ferrone is THE voice of Lucas and all the recent Sanford “Prey” audible books. Love LOVE his subtle intonations and way of imparting dry humor. I can’t imagine another narrator doing the series. Keep up the fine work Richard.
As for the book itself, one of the best John Sanford novels. It’s edgy. It kept me guessing what was coming next. Many authors get formulaic after so many books in a series. They start cutting the books way down. They turn and churn them into serial stories (Are you listening Stuart Woods?) Sanford has managed to keep things sharp and fresh. Good for you John, keep it up. And keep Ferrone on the team.

Deep Dive

Best Sandford Prey story in years. Loved Davenport and Flowers working together, especially outside of Upper Midwest. Interesting criminal behavior. Ferrone’s reading engaging—once I started story, couldn’t put it aside. Looking forward to reading story in about a month, enjoying the pace again.

Lucas and Virgil are the perfect couple!

I love the way Sandford writes. The moment I started this book, I knew that I would enjoy it. While I do miss his old sidekicks, the new ones are growing on me, especially Ray. This is an exciting adventure that will keep you wanting more. Obviously, I recommend Ocean Prey and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

good book but not his best

John Sandford is my favorite author... period. I just love the way he writes. Her has a very fluid way of writing. Not one of those authors who feel the need to use every adjective in the book to describe an adjective used to describe a sunset, or fog or anything really. I've read every book he's written and in the beginning his stories also had some mystery to them. Trying to figure out who did it and why it was done...

This book though, the last couple really, is just a straight procedural storyline. you know who did it and why they did it and Lucas is just really running them down. I still enjoy his writing but his books aren't quite as entertaining as they used to be.
