About this listen

Imagine lacking something that everyone else has.

Something that proves you belong to this world. Something so vital that without it, you are nothing. A plague. A myth. A human.

Fifteen winters old, Hirka learns that she is an Odin's child—a tailless rot from another world. Despised. Dreaded. Hunted. She no longer knows who she is, and someone wants to kill her to keep it a secret. But there are worse things than humans, and Hirka is not the only creature to have broken through the gates…

Odin's Child is a unique fantasy with Norse roots. An epic clash of xenophobia, blind faith, and the right or will to lead. The first in a trilogy, Odin's Child is a thrilling modern fantasy epic.

Had to push through, but glad I did!

I had to restart this book at least 3-4 times before I finally got INTO it. I’m glad I pushed through! It’s a very unique storyline, plenty of betrayal and twists and action to propel the story. The narration is not my favorite, and some parts were extra fluffy for no reason. The ending was fantastic, and made me excited for the next!

An exceptional fantasy

Everything about this story was good and the narration was fantastic. The world building was interesting and original, the love story side plot was heartbreaking, and both our main characters were moral, smart,, and fierce at the same time. You don’t often find smart characters these days - books are filled with self-righteous stupid people- but these two did everything right. Which isn’t to say they got it all right, but mistakes were learning experiences. Completely refreshing and five stars all the way around. I can count on two hands the number of books that make me want to continue a series, but just a few chapters in to book 2 and I already know I’ll be sad when it’s over.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the book was not as dark as the disembodied cover images portray.

Very good story and likable characters. Not your cookie cut out plot and theme. I really enjoyed a view of Nordic mythology. I will definitely consumed the remainder of the story.

Norse myth, magic, mystery, & intrigue

Odin's Child is the first novel in Siri Pettersen’s The Raven Rings series of Norse-inspired epic fantasy. I loved the magic, mystery, romance, and intrigue. Our 15-year-old tailless heroine Hirka was brave, resourceful, and easy to root for. She has a very sweet friendship with the slightly older Rime, an elite warrior and son of a powerful ruling family. I found the other characters interesting as well, although I wasn’t sure which of them could be trusted.

The book gets off to a slow start, but the pace picks up if you stick with it. I found the story held my attention, and I wanted to know what would happen next for Hirka and Rime and the other characters. I still do, and I am eagerly looking forward to Book 2. I recommend this book for fans of epic fantasy, Norse mythology, political intrigue, and slow-burn romance.

The audiobook production was excellent, and I loved the narration by Siobhan Waring. She’s a joy to listen to, with a delightful accent and distinctive voices and speech patterns to suit each character, and the ability to convey mood and emotion effectively. The story works very well as an audiobook.
