Publisher's summary

A mysterious growth covers three deer on Miller Run Road outside of Griffin, Arizona. The sickly animals are mistaken for scared until they brazenly attack a car, causing a fatal accident.

Like everyone else in town, Cass “Scoop” McDaniels has lived in Griffin her entire life. When she is assigned the accident story, her findings are dismissed. The story dies with the people on the road.

But Cass doesn’t give up.

Griffin is isolated. The nearest city is 30 miles in any direction. Spotty internet and lack of cable means they rely on outdated means of communication. The usual three-day information lag leaves them unaware of the growing threat outside of the safety of their town. By the time Cass uncovers the truth, Griffin must face not only the danger that threatens their existence, but a danger that threatens the existence of all mankind.

A solid apocalypse, but the ending felt abrupt

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~

Jacqueline Druga continues to write intriguing apocalyptic/post apocalyptic stories. My main complaint about the books I’ve read of hers is that sometimes they are a bit too short and that doesn’t allow the story enough time to breath and develop the characters. In this book, we get plenty of character setup before the disaster hits. However, I still wish it was longer.

The story was interesting and the disaster was fleshed out decently. I’d actually enjoy a novella or something to go with this story to further show how the world changes after the disaster has more time to form. The characters are varied and have difference responses to the disaster. It was nice to read a story about the apocalypse that didn’t express the narrative that humans are generally bad and do evil things to each other in a crisis.

Suspense built up well because of the isolation of the community.

Narration was good and the pacing was consistent. I didn’t hear any issues.

Ends Abruptly

The book end very suddenly and you are left wondering about things. Do Kit and Cassie end up together or do Eb and Cassie get back together? Other questions remain unanswered as well. Book 2 picks up with a different set of characters in another location. Books 3 and 4 seem to stay with the characters from Book 2. TBH, I've only read Book 1 so the characters from Griffin may be in the other books. Not sure if I'm that interested in finding out though.
