Publisher's summary

Lyla Moody loves her sleepy little town of Sweet Mountain, Georgia. She likes her job as a receptionist for her uncle's private investigative firm, her fellow true-crime obsessed Jane Doe members are the friends she's always wanted, and her parents just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. But recently, with her best friend Melanie on vacation and her ex-boyfriend and horrible cousin becoming an item and moving in next door to her, her idyllic life is on the fritz. The cherry on top of it all is finding Carol, a member of the club, dead and shoved into a suitcase, left at Lyla's front door.

Unusual circumstances notwithstanding, with Carol's heart condition, the coroner rules Carol's death undetermined. But when they discover that the suitcase belongs to Melanie, who had returned from her vacation the following morning, Sweet Mountain police begin to suspect Lyla's best friend. Determined that police are following the wrong trail, Lyla begins to seek out the real killer — that is, until she becomes the one sought after. Now, finding the truth could turn her into the killer's next plot twist....

The story

Loved the characters and the story. I also enjoyed the setting in small town Georgia.

Looking for new series

I searched for books like “Miss Fortune” series or the “ Stephanie Plum” series this came up. Though I must admit there is no hysterical scenes or slap happy scenes it’s a good mystery but definitely not like those series miss the humor

GREAT FIRST IN A NEW SERIES

LOVED THIS BOOK. LILA AND HER FAMILY SND FRIENDS ARE LIKEABLE CHARACTERS. THE STORYLINE HAD JUST ENOUGH TWISTS AND TURNS, AND THERE ARE ENOUGH JUICY CHARACTERS TO PROMISE MORE INTRIGUE AND FUN FOR A LONG TIME.

Maybe a 2

On Borrowed Crime is flat with uninteresting characters and a plot with a glimmer of hope. The premise of the book is actually interesting, but, I couldn't connect with the characters. I also figured out who did it and I really didn't care why. Dina Pearlman isn't my favorite narrator and she didn't help. I didn't finish the book and returned it.

How unnecessarily long this was.

I was looking for a good cozy, this wasn’t it.
I couldn’t find a speed to make the narration tolerable.
And the story just kept going on and on and on.
Couldn’t finish gave up at chapter 32.
Will not be seeking out the rest of the series. 👎🏼
