About this listen

Well-read, observant, and spirited, a young Elizabeth Bennet draws the attention of a wealthy widower. When she finally meets Mr. Darcy, she outranks him. Of course, that doesn't stop him from insulting her. Married and wealthy, is she still beneath his notice?

Elizabeth's high society connections create new opportunities for her sisters and, in turn, keep Darcy close to her family. When tragedy strikes, will Darcy rise to the occasion? Or will his propensity to give offense show no respect for rank?

I’ve listened to many of these variations of the P&P classic, read the original and seen every movie version. I’ve even listened to other versions where Lizzy was either already married or a widow before meeting Darcy. In those others, her first husband was either someone remote, more of an idea really, or someone not quite worthy of her. In this version, I wept real tears throughout the telling of Lord Robert Talbots death. We’ve already met Mr.Darcy and they have already established their troubled relationship. So even knowing she will again be happy does not take away the sorrow of her loss. He was a wonderful husband for her and a great character in the story.

Another reviewer said this could stand on its own, and yet another suggested it could be its own movie. They are not wrong. This is a wonderful story and should not be missed if you are a fan of the genre.

Stevie Zimmerman is again PERFECT. I am so very grateful that she was chosen to bring this beautiful work by Ms. Adams to life.

I usually don’t like versions where D or E has previously married. There were a couple of sad chapters, but the story is so touching!
Darcy, true to form, is kind of a jerk until he decides Elizabeth is worth fighting for.
Some wonderful new characters. Bonus: No Wickham!

So glad I hung in with this one!

Stevie Zimmerman is a perfect narrator and usually a good sign that it's a decent story. However this one is so well written. Lord Tolbert/Robert is perfect. For the first bit after his passing and with Darcy's marked interest, I was almost rooting against Darcy because I was such a fan of Lord Tolbert! I've never rooted against Darcy, but the writing is such that I was PREVAILED upon to prefer the former gentleman! I can't wait to recommend this one to my sister. :)

Great story and narration!

What would happen if Elizabeth married an Earl long before she ever met Mr Darcy? Parts f this book follow the original with the exception of Elizabeth being a countess and later a widow and now she is the one who is the better standing.
This book did a great job with imagining how things could be different and also brought us inside the Elizabeth and Darcy relationship over the course of many years. It was a fun change from other P&P imagining. The narration by Stevie Zimmerman was superb - she does a great job of making all the voices sound great>

An interesting switch

The narrator is perfect. The premise is uniquely non-canon. The characters are so wonderful. If there was ever a possible beautiful ‘Elizabeth married first to another man not Darcy’ this is it!!! 10*. I cried for nearly the entire second part of the book and still do even though I now have lost count how many times I’ve listened to this.

I cannot recommend this HIGHLY ENOUGH. I love it so much.

I have to read this at least once a year.

5 stars! Not too long even though we get two great love stories with a very likeable new character, Lord Alfred. Darcy is present in both part 1 and 2. I like Darcy’s persistence towards Elizabeth in part 2. He is determined and patient. Darcy is more of an observer in the first part and doesn’t entertain the idea of loving Elizabeth until part 2. He does some strange things—like has too much to drink one night and insults Elizabeth—but that’s his worst offense. The author does an excellent job with pacing the story so that it isn’t too wordy and never drags with too much detail or unnecessary conflict (no Wickham here/ younger Bennet girls are responsible and accomplished). I loved the epilogue for its continuation of the children’s growth into adulthood. Just read it!

Lovely variation

A top 5 P&P variation!! There’s a part 1 and part 2 in one story!! There’s none of the tired “copy and paste”storylines here. No evil George Wickam. No horrid Lady Cat. What is there? Beautifully developed characters. A strong Elizabeth. Bennett sisters who become ladies in their own rights. Men who are equally strong and good.

I will tell you that I cried (actually cried!) in part one.

And I loved part 2 almost as well. And that oart was the Elizabeth + Darcy love story. So that’s saying something.

It’s also interesting to read storylines that address how Mr Bennett was truly not a great gentleman for his daughters. Or his land. I surprise myself that I didn’t put two and two together when reading Austen’s original P&P. But it digress.

Oh, I could go on and on.

Suffice it to say. The story is natural, believable, engrossing, Delightful.

And binge worthy.

Totally worth a credit.

Bravo!

Loved it! This rendition stayed true to the characters while allowing is to see what might have happened had they been nudged in more positive directions.

Great Writing, Great Read

A most entertaining story. Elizabeth as a 17 year maiden falls completely in love. Loved the interactions she as a Duchess, has with Darcy, but especially with Carolyn Bingleys disbelief and caustic remarks. So much fun to watch Carolyn deal with her fall!

Great story
