Publisher's summary

When 30-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson is offered a job tutoring T.J. Callahan at his family's summer rental in the Maldives, she accepts without hesitation; a working vacation on a tropical island trumps the library any day.

T.J. Callahan has no desire to leave town, not that anyone asked him. He's almost 17 and if having cancer wasn't bad enough, now he has to spend his first summer in remission with his family - and a stack of overdue assignments - instead of his friends.

Anna and T.J. are en route to join T.J.'s family in the Maldives when the pilot of their seaplane suffers a fatal heart attack and crash-lands in the Indian Ocean. Adrift in shark-infested waters, their life jackets keep them afloat until they make it to the shore of an uninhabited island. Now Anna and T.J. just want to survive and they must work together to obtain water, food, fire, and shelter.

Their basic needs might be met but as the days turn to weeks, and then months, the castaways encounter plenty of other obstacles, including violent tropical storms, the many dangers lurking in the sea, and the possibility that T.J.'s cancer could return.

As T.J. celebrates yet another birthday on the island, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man.

Love where least expected

This book now rates as one of my all time favorites, along with any of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, and anything by Mary Stewart, Jane Austen, Susanna Kearsley, or Ilona Andrews. I liked the book so much that I had to read it (twice) and listen to it (twice). When reading the original description, I was initially put off by the age difference in the two main characters, but the price was right and it kept showing up on my recommended list on Amazon, so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! It explores the ramifications of two people who at first glance would seem totally incompatible (for good reason) being thrown together on an island (hence the title) and forced to survive on their own for a long time. The first person narrative switches between the two main characters but is easy to follow, and the description of the exotic locale and the minute details of the daily struggle for survival really pulls the reader into the story without being overwhelming. The love story is gradual and feels natural. I'm a sucker for happy endings but don't like them to be too forced, and so I was thankful for the way that even the ending felt natural but left me content that the characters would go on to have a happy life.

Not bad...but not great.

What did you love best about On the Island?

The story. It's a beautiful story of survival - both on the island and off - and of the lengths people will go to for the ones they love, even it if that means letting go.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Impossible. I love Anna and TJ equally.

What three words best describe Heidi Baker’s performance?

I only need two: Too fast.

If you could take any character from On the Island out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I'd take 'em both out...just to be super creepy and watch them being happy together.

Any additional comments?

Heidi did an all right job with the reading, but she needed to seriously slow down. There was little to no pause between description and dialogue and I started getting the feeling I was late for something because she was rushing through telling me the story. It was also really difficult deciphering if we were in TJ's voice or Anna's. I think the audiobook would have benefited from dual readers - one for TJ and one for Anna.

Enjoyable

The narrator definitely could of performed certain parts better, but overall I enjoyed her voice.

The story and everything was great, but the characters personalities were so wrong. Both acted like teenagers, joking in dire situations, and constantly flirting when they were starving to death. I feel like attempting to make the reader laugh, honestly, broke the overall mood of the story. Lastly, the last big kinda drug, I felt after they were rescued it was very predictable what was going to happen but a lot of time was spent dragging out that conclusion.

Read the book

How do you ruin a good book when put to audio? Hire the worst actress possible for the task. Every character sounded the same: high pitched and annoying as hell. Changing the speed of the audio to its slowest cadence didn't help either. Read the book, instead.

Good Beach Read

There is something about being stuck on a deserted island that’s intriguing. Well, reading about it that is. As someone who doesn’t even want to go camping for a weekend it’s my worst nightmare to be lost on an island, but the story fascinated me all the same. Like another island mystery, LOST, I felt compelled to keep listening and see how it would all turn out.

Anna is a thirty-year-old teacher who was hired to tutor sixteen-year-old T.J. over the summer. He’s in remission from cancer and has a lot of ground to make up. They board a seaplane to join T.J.’s parents in the Maldives. The pilot has a heart attack and crashes the plane in the Indian Ocean, leaving Anna and T.J. on their own and fighting for survival. They rely on each other to find food and shelter, and to fend off illness and vicious island creatures. Before long, the relationship is more man-woman than teacher-student, which brings on a whole new level of problem.

Anna and T.J. have to start from scratch to find a way to survive on the island. They have a few supplies from the plane that make it easier but it’s still pretty rough conditions. The island descriptions are vivid and I felt like I was right there with them. Some of the details were more than I wanted and I couldn’t imagine going through that situation.

The story is told in both Anna and T.J.’s POV, and I really appreciated getting both perspectives. Graves does a good job fleshing out the characters and making me care for them. When I started the book I wasn’t sure if I could buy into a relationship between the pair, but it did feel natural given the situation.

I listened to the audiobook of On the Island. The author published the audiobook herself and the narrator is Heidi Baker. The narration is not my favorite ever, but the story is so addictive that I zipped through it anyway. Sometimes it was hard to tell if T.J. or Anna was speaking, except in context, and ideally I would have preferred two narrators to make the voices more distinct. Baker has a bubbly voice and is a fast reader. I tend to like readers to read quicker rather than slower, though it wasn’t always the best choice for this book, which called for more tension and emotion. Listen to a sample to see if this audiobook is a fit for you.

On the Island is a good book to take on vacation, though it might make you nervous to read in-flight. It is easy to get lost in and has an easy, quick pace.

Wonderful book, narration to fast

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is a wonderful book. The narrator has a pleasant voice, but just reads way to fast.. And when I try to slow it down in the audible app I get a very annoying echo.

Would you be willing to try another one of Heidi Baker’s performances?

Only if she slows down.

Enjoyed it!

Would you listen to On the Island again? Why?

Probably at some point.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

At first I didn't think I would be able to listen to this narrator. She was talking so fast at first, and everything was running together. It really got on my nerves. I don't know if she got better as the book went along or if I just got used to her, but by the end it didn't bother me as much.

Any additional comments?

At first I was unsure of this book because of the age difference of the characters, but it turned out to be okay. Parts of the book are unrealistic, but I read for escapism so that never bothers me as long as it's a good story.
