About this listen

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"Blazing...Visceral" (Los Angeles Times) · "Exceptional" (Newsweek) · "Bold...Heartfelt" (New York Times Book Review) · "Thought-provoking and thrilling" (GMA) · "Suspenseful and poignant" (Scientific American)· "Gripping" (The Sydney Morning Herald)

From the author of the beloved national bestseller Migrations, a pulse-pounding new novel set in the wild Scottish Highlands.

Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands. She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska.

Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed—inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is found dead, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, then who did? And what will Inti do when the man she is falling for seems to be the prime suspect?

Propulsive and spell-binding, Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves—if she isn’t consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.

Enjoyed but ending felt rushed

I enjoyed this book, I like the authors writing style and her focus on the connection between nature and humanity. Some parts are dark so be warned if you cannot read about disturbing themes but it works well against the backdrop of the wolves and escaping to rural areas. My only issue is that the ending felt very rushed, every single storyline comes to the most dramatic climax at the same time which may work for some but wasn’t my favorite. Overall I would still recommend the book!

I couldn’t stop listening

I couldn’t stop listening to this haunting story containing beautiful narration and detailed prose. Psychological thriller meets murder mystery meets environmental stewardship; this book grips you and won’t put you down until you finish it.
I was dissatisfied with the ending, but you should still listen and makeup your own mind.

Narrator did an amazing job but story was depressing . May trigger people w history of abuse.

I dont know if it was the time of year but this book was depressing and if it had a different narrator I probably would of hated it completely. It was ok story nothing amazing and i knew the surprise plot before 1/3 into the book. Meh except for how depressing it was and it made me uncomfortable so i feel like author should get some credit again. I don’t know who i would ever recommend this book to honestly.

what did I just "read"?

Disturbing book. The main character Inti and her whole family is disturbed and I hated them all and I had no compassion for anyone in this book except Gus. And he's abused and sticks it out with this disturbed woman.

As I listened to this book, all I felt was confusion. No thank you.

I loved every minute!

I read the book first and absolutely loved it. I then listened to the audio and was stunned by how the story became even more engaging. The narrator did an amazing job of bringing the characters to life. At times, I would close my eyes, and I could swear that the second I opened them, I would see the Scottish Highlands and a wolf in the distance.

Beautiful Narration, Enthralling Story

The narrator has a voice that made me want to follow her through this story. The story itself was heavy with anger and pain that felt real. It also included substantial love and loyalty and the details about the wolf project lightened it tremendously. It felt very yin & yang at times. Had a good bit of violence including domestic violence but I felt it was done tastefully. I enjoy an edgy, darker story now and again.

One of the best!!

Really really great story & awesome narrator. Everything I love in an audiobook, dark but not depressing, believable characters, Saskia character voice great as always. Hard to explain without spoilers but I think in this story there is something for everyone 👍👍
