Story
The dust storms that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since. Following a dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, Timothy Egan tells of their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Brilliantly capturing the terrifying drama of catastrophe, he does equal justice to the human characters who become his heroes.

Story
In 1918, after four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Three years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel is tending the grave of her newly lost infant when she hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up on shore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

In Jason Mott’s Hell of a Book, a Black author sets out on a cross-country publicity tour to promote his bestselling novel. That storyline drives Hell of a Book and is the scaffolding of something much larger and more urgent: Mott’s novel also tells the story of Soot, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past, and The Kid, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour.

On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

So many had given their lives to save him-and he would have readily done the same for them. At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.

"To begin with I was in love and I am in love so that's not hard," Barbara Bush told her granddaughter Ellie LeBlond Sosa. Sosa had asked for the secret to her and President George H.W. Bush's 77-year love affair that withstood World War II separation, a leap of faith into the oil fields of West Texas, the painful loss of a child, a political climb to the highest office, and after the White House, the transition back to a "normal" life. Sosa and co-author Kelly Anne Chase paint the portrait of the enduring relationship of George and Barbara Bush.

Veterans must read.
As a veteran, I am proud of North Platte. I had family that lived near here, but were not aware of the history. I wish they did so they could have shared with us.

The BEST of America unveiled!
An enthralling, nostalgic recounting of previously little known sacrifices, made by unrecognized people in the HEARTland of America that has become known as "the greatest generation". The unearthing and extolling of people and values that made our Country great will challenge you to rethink your life and perhaps even move you to invest it by serving others, while leaving you with a sense of gratitude!

Amazing book!
Amazing book, during our difficult time now with this virus. I needed to listen to something that was uplifting. listen to this book gives me a lot of hope that we could come together as a nation and defeat this virus. Just like a small town did years ago to support our troops and bring hope. If they could do that in North Platte during WWII with only 1,200 people imagine what we all could do as a country.

Great story, not well written, but The story must be sold!
This is the story of people gathering together selflessly to do good. Not as well written as it could have been, but a story that must be told and must be heard. Don’t miss it.

How a small town helped win the war
Where does Once Upon a Town rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?
It is a wonderful story.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the concept of how this town turned a mistake into an event that touched the souls of so many of the men going off into an uncertain future

Amazing act of love!
A friend recommended this book. She was a small girl during WW II but my dad was a navigator (human GPS) in the Army Air Corps. This beautiful story puts so much into perspective about what was behind the home front scene when caring Americans were at their very best during the war. The unspoken question hanging in the air is “Could we ever rise to the challenge like this again?” I don’t know but this story could teach us how.
Fine narration as well-expressive, weighty, but not too sentimental. I HIGHLY recommend!

Good book about a special place
I really enjoyed learning about the North Platte Canteen and the author did a lovely job recreating the picture. The narrator on the Audible verson sells it perfectly. What an amaizing time and scerfice our country was in supporting our troops fighting in WWII. My onl shortfall of the book is that it was probably 2-4 chapters too long. I recommend this book if you want to dive into a histroy lesson at a micro level about American pride!

Once upon a Town
I loved everything about this book. The story, the narration! It made me sad that the civility of that era is almost gone. It was so remarkable to know that for over five years there was this wonderful community of giving people, their resources and their time. I am sure there were great rewards for their generosity.

Fantastic read!
I grew up in rural Nebraska and this book describes our community very well. A lovely, true story that is a balm to read in these times if cruel words flung across the air waves. Thank you, Bob Greene! And thank you Audible for this recording. ❤️

Absolutely fantastic!
I thought Bob Greene (as well as Fritz Weaver) did a masterful job on this book! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt like I had a better understanding of my Dad, who was a soldier in the WW2 effort on the German front. Dad was captured by the Germans and he spent the last 6 months of the war in a German POW camp in Austria.
