Publisher's summary
Internationally best-selling author Alex Kava delivers a searing thriller of one woman's encounter with her past which could jeopardize her future
Melanie Starks has never lived life by the rules. She and her 17-year-old son, Charlie, have been running one con job or another for as long as she can remember, justifying the petty crimes as the necessary survival moves of a single mother. But Melanie is ready to give it up. Then Jared Barnett reappears in her life.
Fresh out of prison after serving five years of a life sentence for murder, Jared is released on a technicality that by no means proves his innocence. And he's feeling more invincible than ever. He has the perfect plan for a big score and he needs Melanie's help. But everything goes terribly wrong. Only one thing is clear: A line has been crossed. Suddenly there's no turning back, and there is nothing left to lose.
"This is a one-night read with some unexplained loose ends that won't bother readers hooked on hair-raising car chases and gruesome murder scenes." (Publishers Weekly)

Shocked by a five-month arson spree that left rural Virginia reeling, Washington Post reporter Monica Hesse drove down to Accomack County to cover the trial of Charlie Smith, who pled guilty to 67 counts of arson. But Charlie wasn't lighting fires alone: he had an accomplice - his girlfriend, Tonya Bundick. Through her depiction of the dangerous shift that happened in their passionate relationship, Hesse brilliantly brings to life the once-thriving coastal community and its distressed inhabitants.

Story
A ship's pilot legendary for guiding mammoth freighters through the narrows of Puget Sound, Rolf Neslund was a proud Norwegian, a ladies' man, and a beloved resident of Washington State's idyllic Lopez Island. Virtually indestructible even into his golden years, he made electrifying headlines more than once: after a ship he was helming crashed into the soaring West Seattle Bridge, causing millions in damages; and following his inexplicable disappearance at age 80. Was he a suicide, a man broken by one costly misstep? Had he run off with a lifelong love? Or did a trail of gruesome evidence lead to the home Rolf shared with his wife, Ruth?

Story
To all appearances, Dennis Rader was a model citizen in the small town of Park City, Kansas, where he had lived with his family almost his entire life. He was a town compliance officer, a former Boy Scout leader, the president of his church congregation, and a seemingly ordinary father and husband. But Rader's average life belied the existence of his dark, sadistic other self: he was the BTK serial killer.

Here, writer Steve Lehto recounts the stories behind the houses where Lizzie Borden supposedly gave her stepmother "40 whacks", where the real Amityville Horror was first unleashed by gunfire, and where the demented acts of the Manson Family horrified a nation.

One False Move
We loved this book, my husband and I. We listened to it while on the road and thoroughly enjoyed it. The time just flew. I thought the reader did a pretty good job!

Four words...
...Most annoying narrator ever. Her scratchy voice, her intonation, the way she reads dialog, the way she reads narrative... In other words, everything. She's like nails on a chalkboard to me. She doesn't do different voices, ie. she's not an actor. She's a reader and not a good one. Everything and everybody sounds the same: horrible. I tried. I actually am interested in the story, but I only managed 30 minutes. I'll have to buy the book, which I'll probably never do, so that's unfortunate.
